I'm actually not sure if Houlahan really realizes what he's talking about. Sharif actually has said his party will not compete for the elections. The PPP is in disarray and what is left is Musharaf's PML. The parties in Pakistan are really just extensions of their leaders. I mean, you aren't voting for your individual... you are really voting for Musharraf or Sharif or Bhutto.
Furthermore, the MAIN ISSUE is whether Musharraf is VALID as President. The Supreme Court was about to declare his election illegal when he declared emergency rule and if Sharif or Bhutto was to win the parliament (or a joint coalition among them) would have acted to get Musharraf tossed out out of power and a new Presidential election which Musharraf would participate in as a civilian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musharraf On October 6, 2007, Musharraf won a vote to be re-elected Pakistan's president. However, the Supreme Court ruled that no winner would be proclaimed until it decides on the legality issue Did ole Houlahan forget that whole thing? |

In this instance it is particularly disgusting since it would be only the good of your country to elect the most qualified leader available. ![]() Clinton got caught with her pants down from not knowing the difference between the bicameral parliament and the President of Pakistan while pretending to be an expert on it. The empress has no clothes, and since journalists are now hired based on their looks', it's left to regional experts on the Internet to point out how naked the politicians really are with their pretended expertise. |

But the democrats are going to dance around blowing rainbows and nominate her. ![]() ![]() Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Yeah, "hindsight". That thing called paying attention when a candidate reveals over and over again that he's a dumbass while he's running for office. Your dear George made an almost identical gaffe with regards to Pakistan when he was running for President for the first time, pretending to know a lot about Pakistan -- the thing is, back then Press had balls so they actually had to set up the trap by asking a question of Musharraf's name, not just waiting for candidate to make a big ass out of him all by himself. http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/presidents/george-w-bush/ in a television interview with Boston NBC affiliate WHDH, George got in way over his head when the reporter started needling him on details. He ended up sounding like he hadn't quite finished reading through the whole pile of briefing papers yet: GOVERNOR BUSH: The new Pakistani General, he's just been elected -- not elected, this guy took over office. It appears this guy is going to bring stability to the country and I think that's good news for the subcontinent. JOURNALIST: And you can name him? GOVERNOR BUSH: General... I can name the general. JOURNALIST: And it's...? GOVERNOR BUSH: "General." JOURNALIST: And the Prime Minister of India? GOVERNOR BUSH: The new Prime Minister of India is... [pause] No. Immediately, you know what Bush is thinking: What the hell is this? Suddenly it's time to regurgitate a bunch of names that nobody's ever heard of? Book knowledge has got nothing to do with real leadership. But when Bush tried to turn the tables on the little smartass, it didn't go well: GOVERNOR BUSH: Can you name the Foreign Minister of Mexico? JOURNALIST: No sir, but I would say to that: I'm not running for President. Many people mistook episodes like this as indications of Dubya's inability to do his homework. Critics charged that he obviously possessed subnormal intelligence and/or a diminutive attention span and/or a crucial misunderstanding of what it takes to be President. Once again, the underlying problem here is the assumption that Bush believed that the Foreign Leaders of the World game was an important factor for voters. And Bush knew it wasn't. So he didn't waste his time trying to memorize a long list of names that nobody really cared about. The average person isn't a policy wonk; they couldn't name the new Prime Minister of India, and they didn't care if George could either. Of course, most American voters were like Bush -- they didn't bother to do their homework on researching and comparing the two candidates enough to realize that Bush was monstrously incompetent. And there you are, with the government you deserve. |

And this: is a personal attack, no matter how you spin it. just like I told, you are now confusing the content of this thread so casual readers wouldn't bother to read this all and find out that clinton's self-advertised "foreign policy expertise" doesn't exist. enjoy obscuring reality in the name of partisanship, i guess |

Actually, Imran makes some valid points. He doesn't deserve to be attacked so harshly for them. You can attack his point though. ![]() I'm sure, though, that the leadership succession of the PPP after Bhutto's death really supports his point that these parties aren't just extension of their leaders. |

Dinodoc, Ben, thanks for the info.
-DC. As for praise for Musharraf, well, I don't like the fact that it's probably not genuinely meant or genuinely delivered, but I'm glad to see some support for the guy- while he has mismanaged a lot of things, if he were to come falling down without a viable replacement, the whole country would follow soon thereafter. As for Huckabee's comment, it is valid that foreign 3rd-country illegals are passing through Mexico- and it only takes 2-5 getting through to do some real damage to a country... or 16 (was that the number for 2001?). His comments were as reasonable as any. |
