Default Reuters uses screenshot from Titanic as a press photo
Amusing bit of news from Finnish tabloid Iltasanomat today.

Apparently Reuters is using a screenshot from the movie Titanic as one of the press photos in a news item about the Russian sub planting a flag beneath the North Pole.

Here's a comparison shot from Iltasanomat with an actual screenshot from Titanic on the bottom:

The picture is used in this article as picture 2: Russian Sub Plants Flag Under North Pole.

Iltasanomat reports also, that Reuters was very surprised about this and are looking into this. Here's a screenshot of the picture at Reuters.com in case they take it down: click for picture

Journalism at its finest! How could they not notice the difference between the two subs they alleged to be there?

Sub 1
Sub 2

They didn't even think to ask how anyone could possibly have taken the photo of the sub on the seabed without another sub. Makes me doubt the authenticity of the other shot of the submarine under water.

I'd imagine a guy in a wet suit would have taken the photo... on his iPhone.

Don't think that I don't remember where I heard it, but (along the same lines), a movie director was once asked 'This scene is supposed to be pitch black - where does the light come from by which I can see the actor?', and he answered 'from the same place where the music comes from'.

Small video would have been better.

Well, it's a bit better than the first try, which the editor presumably rejected!

What about The Sun/Tabloids using that guys holiday picture from South Africa of a Great White to start up a scare story about Sharks off the English coast. Great editorial judgement.

No, it was an atlantic white sided dolphin that was jumping, the other one they claimed was a great white, was in fact a basking shark.

Yeah, but the image suggests that there were 3 down there - two in the image and one taking the picture!

is there any picture available at all that shows the russian flag on the bottom of the sea, way under the ice?

if not, I consider it pure propaganda.

Oh so all the articles in the Guardian and The Mail, The Telegraph, etc. talking about this picture that appeared in the Sun being fake are the ones who are really wrong? Damn this gets confusing

When has the news ever been clear cut and truthful?

How about that story about the Iraqi woman who stated that two American bullets hit her house? The captioned picture had her holding up the alleged bullets; two perfectly clean bullets that haven't been fired yet, and weren't even of a NATO caliber.
