Miss Yolanda, I never thought of this subject with regard to fasting.
"Human genes into animals Genetic engineering (GE) researchers have been putting human genes into animals for years for medical purposes, such as trying to make pig hearts human-compatible. Biotechnology companies have also investigated putting human genes into animals for food production. Gen Pharm bioengineered Herman, the first transgenic dairy bull, for producing milk with a human protein. By identifying which proteins are most important for infants, laboratories will be able to produce formula more similar to mother's milk by inserting human genes. (It would not be surprising if companies then promoted their genetically engineered formula as being just like human milk but having less dioxin.) Scientists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture put human growth hormone genes into pig embryos to produce faster growing hogs. The project was abandoned, partly because the resulting pigs were so deformed that some could not support their own weight. " "Putting human genes into plants would go beyond crossing the species barrier (plant to plant or animal to animal). It would cross the kingdom barrier (animal to plant). This barrier has already been broken, with transfers of firefly genes to corn, hamster genes to tobacco and flounder genes to tomatoes. " Full article http://www.greens.org/s-r/19/19-08.html |

Sisters and brothers,
Such a crazy world, it's not a film, it's true! The disease of human has attacked the vitals. 150 human animal hybrids grown in UK labs: Embryos have been produced secretively for the past three years: Scientists have created more than 150 human-animal hybrid embryos in British laboratories. The hybrids have been produced secretively over the past three years by researchers looking into possible cures for a wide range of diseases. The revelation comes just a day after a committee of scientists warned of a nightmare ‘Planet of the Apes’scenario in which work on human-animal creations goes too far. Last night a campaigner against the excesses of medical research said he was disgusted that scientists were ‘dabbling in the grotesque’. Figures seen by the Daily Mail show that 155 ‘admixed’ embryos, containing both human and animal genetic material, have been created since the introduction of the 2008 Human Fertilisation Embryology Act. This legalised the creation of a variety of hybrids, including an animal egg fertilised by a human sperm; ‘cybrids’, in which a human nucleus is implanted into an animal cell; and ‘chimeras’, in which human cells are mixed with animal embryos. This morning I was reading The Akathist of Thanksgiving by Metropolitan Tryphon. I read it quite regularly and it always fills me with joy. Nothing about human genes being put into plants and animals and then eating the result without knowing what we are eating. This Akathist is about the wonder of nature and about its beauty.
Kontakion 2 O Lord, how good it is for us to be Thy guests! How fine it is for us in Thy world. The fields are fragrant, the mountains rise high up into the sky, and the golden rays of sun and the light clouds are reflected in the water. All nature mysteriously speaks about Thee, all is filled with Thy mercy and all carries the seal of Thy love. Blessed be the earth which, with her short-lasting beauty, awakens the yearning for the eternal homeland in Thy kingdom, where in everlasting beauty resounds the song: Alleluia! KONTAKION 13 O all-good and life-giving Trinity, receive our gratefulness for all thy goods and show us worthy of Thine eternal treasures, so that we may multiply the talent entrusted to us, reach Thy kingdom and enter into the joy of our Lord, singing to Him victorious song: Alleluia!(thrice) http://www.orthodox.net/akathists/ak...nksgiving.html From the moment man was created by God, stewardship has been with us! It is not a new subject nor is it just about money. Stewardship is Orthodox because it is part of God's plan! Stewardship and being a good steward are core teachings of Holy Scripture and the Church. Well done good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. I just have read a book The Six Days of Creation (On the Hexaemeron), it's writing of Saint Basil the Great, I am glad we share the same view:
How then, they say, can Scripture describe all the plants of the earth as seed-bearing, when the reed, couch-grass, mint, crocus, garlic, and the flowering rush and countless other species, produce no seed? To this we reply that many vegetables have their seminal virtue in the lower part and in the roots. The need, for example, after its annual growth sends forth a protuberance from its roots, which takes the place of seed for future trees. Numbers of other vegetables are the same and all over the earth reproduce by the roots. Nothing then is truer than that each plant produces its seed or contains some seminal virtue; this is what is meant by "after its kind." So that the shoot of a reed does not produce an olive tree, but from a reed grows another reed, and from one sort of seed a plant of the same sort always germinates. Thus, all which sprang from the earth, in its first bringing forth, is kept the same to our time, thanks to the constant reproduction of kind. The field of the poor would bare much food but it is swept away through injustice.
This proverb has always struck me as important in the matter of food, we do not need to produce more rather to share it more fairly. There is a strong movement of fair and ethical trading in the UK which makes shore the producers get a fair price for their products and enables them to support their family. Much of the problem with famines comes from taking perfectly good food for humans and feeing it to animals, this producing a 10% of the amount of food on the market as the original crops would have provided. There have been famines through history but through planing and fair distribution of resources no one has to starve, this was what happened when Joseph organised Egypt to be prepered for the prophiseyed famine, what is needed is fair distribution of what there is rather than trying to get the land to do what it cannot. This may mean that we cannot have everything we would like but often we eat far more than we need, I would rather go without and see the poor food then eat all I want while others die for lack of the food that I horde. We do not need GM food we need fair distribution of the food that there is with stuadship of the world we were sent to care for not plunder. Phoebe |

I definitely eat more than I should. I throw away a lot of food. I am a sinner in this regard. How can we eat with joy as we are supposed to when we know that babies, children and adults die from lack of food? I was watching a documentary the other day about illegal immigrants from African countries trying to get into France. Their mothers and sisters sell their gold jewellery and any lots of land they may have to raise enough money to pay those who transport them to this country. The same system as that employed by other people and other countries. One man said that no matter how many times he was stopped he would continue to try to get into this country because he watched as his sister died from lack of water and he refused to live this way. The mothers and relatives have formed groups and one of their decisions is not to finance their sons in the future because a large number of them have either drowned or are now lost without their families knowing what has become of them.
How can we live while things like this happen? How can we live Christian lives when we throw away surplus food that could be consumed by those in countries that have been destroyed by corrupt governments? GM food has proven to be just another scam in countries like India. You can find a lot of information about this on the Internet. One good piece of news is that the European Union has voted to employ strict regulations in regard to GM foods. Just hope that the European countries will stick to these regulations. Something which is not going to be easy because the pressure from the US is tremendous. \ |
