Gina Rinehart, the world's richest woman, says people who are jealous of the wealthy should work harder. (Twitter / August 30, 2012)

OR, get born into the right family.

Forgive my ignorance but why is what she said upsetting?

If you want more money you SHOULD work harder. Also it is the socialist/collectivist govt that makes people poor ( or nearly impossible to climb out of)

The richest people I know work the hardest/longest/most hours and have the most responsibility. The poorest people I know work part time and have zero responsibility. And the middle class folks I know have one or the other, they work hard but don't have much responsibility (oil and gas drilling/coal mining) or they have a lot of responsibility but don't have the hardest jobs around (IT folks/ middle managers)

Do you think this woman made all of her money through competition in the free market?

HELL NO!

She made it through Government MONOPOLY. Make no mistake about it.

Right...but working hard is just the first step. Once you work hard and have extra money ( that the government doesnt steal) then comes the investment part (either your business or someone else's). Obviously you will not save 10 billion just by working, but working hard is the first step to getting out of poverty. You can become "not poor" on hard work alone.

I get that SHE didn't get rich from hard work but that doesn't mean it isn't a way out of poverty.

Gina's father Lang worked hard in a harsh environment, and as his only child she followed his footsteps. The opportunity for wealth from the mineral resources of Western Australia provided the basis... but both dedicated their life to expanding their resources. Name calling and insults re her weight is hardly appropriate nor relevant.

As for Gina, yes

The ugly stick seems not to have been felt, apparently so it was initiated repeatedly.

Good one Gina
The world's richest woman, Australian mining tycoon Gina Rinehart:
“If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain. Do something to make more money yourself - spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.

“Become one of those people who work hard, invest and build, and at the same time create employment and opportunities for others.”

Meh. This is the old liberalism vs conservatism debate, and what's right goes back and forth between the two in cycles. One side says work harder and you'll be better off. This is true. The other side says maybe there's some importance to quality of life instead of just putting your nose to the grindstone your entire life. Also true.

I don't accept blanket statements on either side. We've all seen situations where one or the other is right, and other times where it's wrong.

“If you're jealous of those with more money"... THAT is what Gina said. The remark was not directed to those content as they are and not jealous.
