To quote the ancient Greeks, I think that 'everything in moderation'...

Balance is the hardest thing to accomplish in one's spiritual life in today's world, but we must constantly struggle for it, so as not to be slaves to pleasures and to 'the world'...but I do not think it is a sin, (not that I am anyone--perhaps I should say: 'I hope' that it is not) to partake of them to a certain degree.

Even the strictest Orthodox monasteries have heat, showers, and indoor plumbing and other modern conveniences.

In Christ,
Alice

After reading back though the variety of comments in this thread about "modernity" I think I have decided that this is absolutely the weirdest thread I have ever read on monachos. :0)

But, I'm game. I like the electric can opener because it opens cans that they didn't use to have in pre-modern times.

I agree - and so I have moved this thread into the "Casual and Personal" area where it is more appropriate and less weird.

Is it sinful to be weird Fr David?

Because I have a great deal of additional repenting to do if that's so. I recall the very moment of my weirdness-revelation. I was 13 and I was putting on my pants. I realized I put on both legs at the same time (I always had).

The words running through my head? "He's like everyone else, he puts his pants on one leg at a time."

It's been downhill ever since.

As the preacher says - there is a time for every purpose under heaven, including weirdness.

Since we do not have St. Chrysostom, St. Basil, St. Gregory, St. Athanasius and so on I am thankful we have monachos.net (but not only for westerners thankfully).

Fabio: I would say it is "Consent of the Governed" - hands down.

Andreas: When did Modernity start? When Adam & Eve were banished from Paradise.
