While most American kids do play video games, the center of the video game market has shifted older as the first generation of gamers continues to play into adulthood. Already 62 percent of the console market and 66 percent of the PC market is age 18 or older. The game industry caters to adult tastes. Meanwhile, a sizable number of parents ignore game ratings because they assume that games are for kids. One quarter of children ages 11 to 16 identify an M-Rated (Mature Content) game as among their favorites. Clearly, more should be done to restrict advertising and marketing that targets young consumers with mature content, and to educate parents about the media choices they are facing. But parents need to share some of the responsibility for making decisions about what is appropriate for their children. The news on this front is not all bad. The Federal Trade Commission has found that 83 percent of game purchases for underage consumers are made by parents or by parents and children together.

Violent video games do NOT make violent kids. Hell, they make more peaceful and normal kids for allowing teenagers and pre-teens to vent their frustration in a healthy way. At the end of the day, it boils down to this. If you don't want your kids playing CoD/GTA/Halo/whatever "Violent" game you can think of, DON'T BUY IT and but out of other peoples business. It's all on the parents to parent their kids. If anything, you should be mad at the parents that treat the PS3/Xbox as a baby sitter. And all that does is just show how much they don't care for their kids and put a few annoying eight year olds on XBL.
People saying what the OP are ruin gaming, it's the same reason Mw3 and BF3 got banned in the UK. Ignorant airheads thinking OH VIOLENT GAMES MAKE PEOPLE RIOT BANZORZ!1!!1!1111!!!!!!. It's pathetic. |

The thread wasn't even about video games creating violent children, that's what happens when parents don't do their stupid job :l.
Well anyway, I have to agree, parents are becoming far too submissive when it comes to their kids and do not understand the fact that the ESRB rating isn't just a recommendation, it's there to make sure that kids can't play video games that are too violent or too sexual or has content that is inappropriate for minors, but they do not seem to care, because they want to make their hellspawn of a child happy, even if that means he/she turns into a brat. Parents need to step up and understand that, while video games are there to help keep your child passive and behaved while at home, they also have to understand that the age ratings on video games should be enforced. I mostly say this though, because I'm tired of playing Black Ops and hearing what seems to be 8-12 year olds playing. |
