At around 2:45 you can see a large electric motor, that appears to be geared to the flywheel - a starter motor as found in a car.
Big diesels like that will normally have a decompression mechanism to reduce the load on the starter and once it's turning the decompression is released and it runs normally, coming up to idle speed, which could be only a few rpm up to perhaps 120ish at full speed. I'd like to have heard it under full load, there's something special about big diesels and steam engines, isn't there ![]() Some large steam engines used for pumping, lots of gleaming brass and copper - they were artisans as much as engineers in those days!. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP9__nQ-_YM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM4Ig...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZRP2...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXG73...eature=related |
