You need more immigrants from Eastern Europe. We secularised them well.

80% believe in God, but religion is declining? Sounds like you're catching the "spiritual, but not religious" bug. Only time will tell whether such people will give it up and go agnostic, return to traditional religions, or simply become Wiccan for optimal silliness.

Don't get too excited by this, Asher:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/religio...religion_N.htm

Americans who don't identify with any religion are now 15% of the USA, but trends in a new study shows they could one day surpass the nation's largest denominations — including Catholics, now 24% of the nation.

American Nones: Profile of the No Religion Population, to be released today by Trinity College, finds this faith-free group already includes nearly 19% of U.S. men and 12% of women. Of these, 35% say they were Catholic at age 12.

But if Nones, now 22% of all adults ages 18 to 29, continue to gain among young adults, to draw more people "switching out" from denominations and to replace more religious older people, researchers forecast one in five Americans will be Nones in 20 years.

Why would that dampen his enthusiasm? I'm sure he feels that having the U.S. become more secular is a good thing as well.

No because Canada isn't all that secular if it's only a few percentage points higher with 'no religion' than that 'theocratic backwater' called the US.
Are you not capable of understanding the meaning of trend lines, Al?

Wow really? Why the **** don't you just leave it alone? I was trying to put a cork in Asher's enjoyment (though he may get more enjoyment out of it than before, who knows).

Look, the article describes Canadians as petty fiddians, which apparently means people of little faith, as a result of this study. The USA is right behind Canada though in the same department. Canada isn't currently in some golden secular age filled with infidels anymore than the US is right now.

So my point is that Asher shouldn't be all excited because Canada isn't significantly more secular than some other developed nations, most notably the United States.
Consider the thread title is talking about the trend, yes, you're being an idiot. He didn't compare the situation to the U.S. or any other country. The ONLY point being made was that Canada was becoming less religious, and by a significant statistical leap. That the U.S., being a similar culture, is also experiencing a secularizing trend is irrelevant to that point. It's as if someone celebrated the decline of HIV transmission rates in a country and you piped up telling them not to be so happy, because a country next door to them is experiencing a similar decline. WTF?

Explain your thought process. How do you get from Asher being happy about Canada becoming more secular, to deciding that he shouldn't be happy about the US getting more secular?

Does Asher not always try to show how great Canada is relative to the US? Whether it's gay rights, healthcare, education, taxation, sports, whatever, Asher relishes in it. Why would this thread be any different?
No, he doesn't. He's a dual citizen, you know.

As with Guynemer, your attempts to stereotype another poster based on your very limited knowledge of them and inability to see past the stupid assumptions you make is just offensive. Do you really not wonder why no one here likes you?

And the Canada vs USA thing happens a lot because it's a very simple troll that riles a lot of people, not the least of which is you, Alby.

Most people in Canada were from Britain back then. It was a British Colony, after all.

The people who were in what is now Canada formed what is now Canada.

Canadians NEVER burnt down the White House; this is simply anti-American bullshit that became prevalent during the Trudeau era.
Historically it was actually BRITISH REGULARS who burnt down the White House, as Canada did:

A) NOT EXIST
B) DID NOT HAVE A STANDING ARMY
C) WAS DEFENDED BY: BRITISH GARRISON/FENCIBLES & MILITIA

Did too. In fact, it was so good there were two of them, plus the other loyalist colonies.

B) DID NOT HAVE A STANDING ARMY
C) WAS DEFENDED BY: BRITISH GARRISON/FENCIBLES & MILITIA
And the militia came from where, exactly?

At any rate, the 'we burned down the White House' meme was fun for a while. Then some spoil-sport (Che or Imran, IIRC) read a book or something and the fun began to deflate from the balloon. It's still good to yank a chain or two from the look of it though.

Ways Canada is silly:

1) More stable economy
2) More literate
3) Better educated
4) Non-socially authoritarian/theocratic government
5) Higher average incomes
6) Higher standard of living
7) Lower levels of poverty
