Peter, I am new here, and love having my Justins poslished. Is it politically incorrect to pay some kid 100 pesos to do so? I so much want to be loved and accepted so any direction is this matter would be most appreciated.
Ex-pats living on a fixed income get annoyed because the local rate for shining shoes is something like 10-20 pesos(?). The kids get used to charging more for foreigners and then it cuts into their beer money. You'll also hear them complain that the kids spend the money on sniffing glue and that they then end up harassing them when they walk down the street. My general rule is to support kids who are younger and prob can't afford to be in schools. Kids without shoes or tatty sandals are usually my first choice. If you see a kid with nice shoes, he prob has money from somewhere else.

The kids often get shook down by cops who take the kits for ransom. Then the kids are begging for money to get them back or borrow from their friends, because if they go home without the kits, they will get a beating. Of course, some kids use this to scam people as well. I find it appalling to see the cops chase after the kids when they are not making any trouble. Typically you will see the same dozen or so kids during the week and they know how to behave.

Some of those stories can be entertaining though lol

I guess I can qualify as a "newbie with experience". I had been lurking on this board for at least a year before I even created an login, and even then I didn't post much. It was a great resource when I had to figure some things out. And yes, I used search

I live there part time, and in the process have learned TONS. As others have mentioned on different threads, there is no substitution for "on the ground" experience.

We are all different people with different backgrounds and mindsets. Just as in real life, there are always going to be people that rub you the wrong way. I have already had the pleasure of talking to some nice people and unfortunately some really ignorant ones. I make my best effort to even tempered on forums, but some people don't make that easy....expect the fireworks!
Interaction has been great lately. Let's hope it will continue this way.

I have noticed the posts on DR1 have been more pleasant since the new year.
Did everyone make a New Year's resolution to be a nicer person?
Whatever the reason is, I enjoy reading DR1 more. I find I do not have to skip over as many threads now.
We shall see what happens as the tourist season picks up and we get more "I'm in love with a sanky" threads.
Peace
Dulce
Maybe the absence of some posters and the addition of some new ones?

IslandDreaming, I think that combined with the moderators working overtime has helped. The new members introduction has also cut down on attacks on the new posters. Now maybe people won't be afraid to contribute more.
Maybe more posters are using the ignore feature too.

In Jarabacoa most of the Limpiabotas at the park in the morning go to school in the afternoon and vice-versa in the afternoon(the morning class works the afternoon). They take off their good clthing and put on their rags. Some are from poor families, but not all.

The off-the-shelf ignore system could use some tweaking. You ignore someone and then you see they responded to one of your posts, but you just can't read it. But now the mods are now making it so they can't see your post and you can't see theirs and there's no "click to see ignored post" option. That's better. Some of the regs get along like "two cats in a bag" and it does get tiring to see the same arguments rehashed all the time or (be in them for that matter.)

I agree. Not sure if if some people just have me on "ignore", it's just a fluke or someone decided to 'tidy up the place'. If it's the latter, I say it's a strategic move; for every person like that gone, perhaps more quality "newbies" (new to the DR or just new to the site) will be enticed to join and participate.

It's nice to be able to read threads that are not hijacked by or filled with insults from self-aggrandizing locos/as. I wanted to just "give up" DR1 because of it...sad because I love the DR and enjoy trying to post pertinent and/or useful information and insights. And I often refer people to the site for info on the DR. It just seemed like some had turned the site into the largest expat virtual pi$$ing contest ever.

So, cheers to agreeing to disagree, and showing ourselves and others some basic R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Oh, and my resolution will be to be the most constructive I can with criticisms, and outline more positive aspects of whichever topic.

Respectfully,

minerva_feliz

So if it is a good new year pi2 will only get banned ,x, times. Solar , seaweed, thermal curtains definitely banned .... along with vehicles that are not a Hummer H1.

Just had a visit from a US citizen who seems to be getting by with a pay of 1.25 an hour plus tips.

pi2.

i was really nasty to people lately so i deviced a new method of being more... say... socially acceptable. you see, i really like homeless dogs, mongrels. so i decided to think about people as mongrels, to see them in a different light. you know, as if they too, were lovable. then i thought no, i like mongrels too much. i cannot rise people to the level of that innocent cuteness. so what other animal that i acknowledge comes to mind? a cucaracha. i do not like their little buggers but i am perfectly okay with their existence in this world. i do not wish death to cucarachas, when i see one i never dispose of it myself, i call miesposo in. so now i think about people as cucarachas. it really helps. they talk to me and all i can see is their little antennae moving rytmically. it's kinda... adorable, you know...?
