Jim...I'm also leaving Toronto in a couple of months and heading to the DR...please keep me posted (either on this thread or PMs), I can use all the info I can get, specially from a fellow "Torontonian."

You mentioned running a few online businesses...care to share some more info me? The reason I ask is because I'm actually just starting up an online business and I am very excited about the fact that I can come to the DR and bring my work with me.

Be advised that unless you can run your online business from an internet cafe, you will have to make prior arrangements for internet access before you arrive, whether it be through a friend here (like I am doing) or as part of your hotel/condo rental as iIt takes a few months to get a phone line hooked up for your own high spped access. There are other options any many on this board can be more helpful about it than I can.

Also be prepared to either sell off all your stuff or put it into long term storage as you are limited to 44 lbs in 2 suitcases and another 11 lbs in a carry on bag. Mind you the people at the Toronto Airport usually let you off for most of your overweight charges. (I was 47 lbs overweight my last trip and they only charged me for 20 lbs) At 7 bucks a pound, it can add up to alot of money if you bring too much with you.

I find that many things are much cheaper here, but then again many things are more expensive too. It does tend to balance out in my favour though specially if you are a smoker as a carton of Marlboro's is only about 8 bucks Canadian rather than 8 bucks a pack back home.

you are also allowed a 30kilo "Sports" bag that the charter airlines don't often tell you about. We always bring down one each (which usually contains everything BUT sports equipment). It's how I bring down a lot of my "give away" school and medical supplies!

Thanks for the criticism but there are many ways to say a phrase in Spanish. "Si no sabes eso tu eres el/la verdadero/a idiota". Like I said I wanted to keep it simple and pattern what he wrote. He is learning. You have no right to judge my Spanish on a phrase like this. Te digo esto claramente para que no te pases conmigo. No me conoces y honestamente no te quiero conocer. Realmente me molesta que tengas la desfachatez de escribir esto sin saber nada de mí. ¡Increíble!

Did you call the airlines and ask them if they would make any exceptions? Because chances are what you have remaining is what you need. Correct? You never know.

I agree! That would translate to "Presidente with ice" and I certainly do not drink it that way.

How about this:
Solamente diez más días hasta que puedo beber una Presidente muy fría.

Anyways enough about the beer, my question was for any suggestions regarding excuses for being overweight on my luggage that might get them to give me a break.

"Faltan dos semanas para mi próxima cerveza bien fría!"

Since, in this country, "cerveza" means Presidente.

Well, I said good bye to Toronto and arrived safe and sound in Sosua yesterday.

The new chapter of my life now begins and I look forward to meeting a bunch of you fellow DR1 expats at Rocky's tonight.

The first thing I bought for my house was some Presidente's for the fridge. Boy did I ever miss them!
