If you ask me, politics is the same the world over. They all say what the people want to hear just to get into power, and then once they are there, the promises are broken and goalposts are moved. It isn't just the DR.

You wonder about politics in the D.R., it is the same game each season when the players return. They all fight to receive the biggest salary and perks, even if their egos bankrupt the team. They fight to be in the limelight, more concerned about improving personal statistics even if it takes away from the team’s progress, rather than improve team statistics. It’s OK to be bad; their fans love them even if they are bad. They take delight in throwing their fans a bone, the fans love receiving a bone. The fans complain when the team loses.
