Ugly tomato contest
I tried Black Krim this year just for something different and they've had the craziest fruit. I think I would win the ugly tomato contest if I entered, but if you have a contender please post it. Can anyone out do me?

Interesting, I can't match that, but I bet they taste good.

Looks more like a Brandywine to me.....

That's pretty knarly Hera.
My wife has been trying to get the "old 84's" going for the last few years, but I think our high summer temps the last few summers have shut them down from any meaningful production. In their best years, they would also produce those "tomatoes growing out of tomatoes" fruit. Real big and knarly. These were an heirloom plant that my wife's grandfather got from someone in North Carolina in 1984. For the last 3 or so years, we've only been able to get a handful of fairly small normal fruit in late fall. We save the seed and try again the following year, but getting no fruit production during the summer. I think I heard from someone that Black Krim was a fairly heat tolerant strain. |
How do they taste?
Are they for cooking or eating raw? No ripe fruit yet here. Only doing a couple of plants, they are beefsteak or bigboys (can't remember). |
So far I'm not crazy about the taste. Kind of flat and the texture is pulpy. No sweetness or tartness to speak of.

Wish I had an ugly tomato to show. Our Lemon Boy plants
are doing really well and I don't have a clue why. The weather has been horrendous for veggie gardening. Lemon Boy must love heat. |
