A shotgun is a staple of home defense. They're cheap, easy to use, and easy to get a hold of. Even lame countries generally let people own them, and they allow your typical tub o' guts to engage in ruthless vigilantism. AA-12s are just plain silly though. Shotgun shells are too heavy and bulky to make an automatic shotgun a practical weapon.

I've seen the show before, and it doesn't say anything about shotgun shells suddenly being as light and easy to carry as rifle rounds. A soldier can carry a couple hundred rounds of 5.56 already loaded into magazines. How many of those AA-12 drums do you expect people to carry? Are folks supposed to stop fighting and reload the entire drum every other minute? The exploding shells aren't relevant. They're not heavy enough to meet the 400 gram minimum for exploding ammunition in wartime. Since they don't let us buy high explosive rounds as civilians, and since soldiers can't use them in war, they don't serve to make the gun any more practical.

It's like the desert eagle, only more illegal and somehow even more useless.

I would still like to have one.

Remington 1100 Nighthawk Tactical
$1640 w/o light
$1939 w/light

Mossberg Persuader (which I own) alternate pistol grip included
$300

The difference will buy a lot of shells.

$1939 w/ light vs. $1640 w/o light.

Hmmm... $300 bucks buys a lot of duct tape, mag lights , and batteries.

Thanks for the link.

Maybe I should ask this: for someone who is completely ignorant about firearms, where should I start? I want to be prepared for three weeks of training that focuses on the two guns I just mentioned.
If they're spending three weeks teaching you about Glocks and M16s, then you'll probably be fine going in ass ignorant. You might want to go to a range and fire off any old gun, just to get the first time jitters out of the way.

You don't even realize what a silly question you've asked? WHY would you solicit the opinion on where to start from someone who hasn't started?
Are you going to ask Al about sexual techniques next?
Well, given you comparison shopped those shotguns for us, it isn't the worst guess he could have made.

EDIT: Oh, wait. It just dawned on me. I thought you were thanking me for the link and then soliciting advice from anyone who didn't know. Sorry.
There's no use trying out a gun of which you have no interest. It doesn't matter. Try the weapon of which you have an interest. Some gun range can accomodate you.
It's just another part of shopping.
