the problem the US has is the huge network of military contractors for home Make-Work is Job #1.

i was once invited onto a "Tiger Team" for a particular program, and told HOW IMPORTANT it was to fix it.

the problem was, water condensing onto the electronics, causing shorts.

i found a $7 fix at the auto parts store - it's called Dielectric Grease. you fill the connector up with grease, water can't get in.


BUT - what they wanted was a $5 Million Re-design. (that would create about 20 man-years of work). i was instructed to ditch the dielectric grease and to propose the re-design.

this resulted in a massive confrontation, similar to that between Cruise & Nicholson in "A Few Good Men". Face to face. i told the 'program manager' that he was full of Sh-t, though in nicer words.


i was then re-assigned to another program, where one of the primary electronic units had "shielding problems". this was because one of the idiots in the department updated the Rev. 1 design to a Rev. 2 design by REMOVING all the ground plane - which was needed for EMI shielding.

so i worked on Rev. 3 - putting the EMI shielding back in, and updating it accomodate other design changes.


the point being, US military contractors engage in MASSIVE amounts of make-work.


both of the incidents above occurred on programs that most of you have heard of. i'm working to collect these little vignettes into something fleshier, that might make good reading - without getting sued.

the old adage about digging ditches & filling them back up would seem common-sense next to US military contractors.

Its easier to "lock on" a missle on to that aircraft when you slow down aircraft like that. And that aircraft isnt by any means designed to be stealthy.
Manouverability is not the name of the game, maybe back in WWII, but not in todays electronic world.
Today the name of the game is "stealth" which is the ability to kill the enemy unseen electronically when you are piloting a chunck of metal where radar is as common as the air itself.

one technology the US does have some mastery of is radar, stealth, electronic countermeasures, etc. - all the electronic cat & mouse games that go along with modern warfare. (they even have 'counter-counter-measures'.)

the consensus is, the fighter pilots are very nervous about entering battle without their EA6B backup.

the EA6B has all sorts of wierd sh-t like "Doppler-Shift Radar". they receive the enemies' radar signal, and re-broadcast it with a time-shift to make it look like the fighter jet is somewhere other than where it really is.

of course there are also game-changers like the use of "chaff." they basically air drop TONS of metal flakes (shades of chemtrails !) which temporarily confuse enemy radar. naturally that creates an opportune moment to "do what you're gonna do".

No, with respect to aerial combat the term 'knifefight' means opponents being right on top of each other, too close to use missiles (i.e. if one hasn't used all of them), and therefore duking it out with cannonfire. Note that with the advent of the F-4 Phantom the Pentagram/MIC in their infinite wisdom designed it without any cannon whatsoever, found it wanting because of this and latter came up with the very lame solution of attaching an 'add-on' cannon to the F-4 on one of its fuselage hardpoints during the course of the 'nam.

You really think that ridicules cannon is of any good when a locked on missle screaming at mach 2 is going to do you any good?

There isnt enough time to even use the cannons.
A US pilot will fire a missile and manuever into position so the opponent has no way around.
If the missile doesnt take out the opponent the US pilot is already in position to fire another.
The soviet pilot hasnt a chance to burst one round of that cannon as hes preoccupied maneuvering from locked on missiles that his aircraft doesnt have the capability of jamming.
The US aircraft will be out of range of the soviet cannon before the soviet can manuever back around to get the US in its sights to burst a round or two.

Like i said its "neat" to watch but totally useless in todays warefare arsenal.

October, 2000 - a Su-24 and a Su-27 do a high speed, low level pass (200 ft. directly over the bridge) over the USS Kitty Hawk A/C carrier in the Sea of Japan; the ONLY aircraft prepared to launch was an EA-6B and once the EA-6B was airborne the Su-27 "was all over his ass" (with the EA-6B pilot calling out for help) and "playing with him like a bear plays with a bunny just before it kills it".

A couple of days later the Russian pilots email photos taken directly overhead of the crew in a state of panic as they scramble to jettison refueling lines from a tender so they can launch interceptors (which would take over 30 minutes to do anyway). The Pentagram *tries* to put the best spin possible on this VERY embarrassing incident.
