Default Will I regret installing steam and buying civ IV complete through it?
The tyranny of the Steam empire knows no limits.

I usually do not have internet connection.

All my games on steam run fine.

I have Civ4 on steam (as well as a disk somewhere)

Civ 4 is an excellent game. Civ 3 has its flaws, but it introduced important concepts to the game. Civ: The Final Frontier, on the other hand...
All this Civ talk made me play Civ 4 and I was playing Final Frontier Plus. I got bored of it (too many planets per star system to micro-manage) but now started a game of Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn.

I saw something like Caveman 2 Cosmos but that looks like a full game will take 100 hours... even has paleolithic hunting and gathering in it

I am curious what multiplayer Civ is like. Do people still play it? How do you get around someone deciding to take all day on his turn?

When I say Civ II, I mean Civ II MP by default.

caveman 2 cosmos is great (you need a pretty powerful machine to play it though), but it does eat up a lot of time. the other problem is after you've played c2c, you will never want to play ROM:AND again. it just feels empty.
The ~8 seconds between turns in the Renaissance in my 11 civ, Large map game is already bothering me.

And that's with 8GB RAM

To be honest, though, I don't need this many civs. 5-6 is probably enough. I'm starting to realize that. With 11 (I don't even know what I started out with since I don't know who was wiped out and who formed from revolutions), you just get a lot of vassal states and backwards, isolated civs.

Scratch that. Now they're offering me contact with Abu Bakr and Ragnar so there's still undiscovered civs.

15 seconds per turn is actually quite reasonable (i also have an 8gig machine). if you play on a smaller map with less civs, the speed will improve.
I'll probably go with 7 civs then (the default on a standard sized map), though with the possibility of new civs forming from revolutions, that may be too much. I can't imagine how people play on Gigantic maps with 28 civs.

15 seconds per turn is not reasonable for me. During peacetime, which is most of the time, I spend more time waiting between turns than doing anything each turn. Call me impatient.

i played on gigantic maps but turn times of more 1 minute in the ancient era were getting too much. what did you think about the pre-historic era?
Oops. I was talking about A New Dawn this whole time.

I meant to say A New Dawn's wait times were already more than I could handle so I don't know about Caveman 2 Cosmos.

Also, btw, for those of you who still have some interest in Civ4, we are about to start an Intersite Demogame. Apolyton has fielded a team and will be going up against all the major civ sites. CivFanatics, WePlayCiv, Realms Beyond, Civ4Players, and a bunch of foreign sites. We always need more people.

Just go here and request to join the private forum:

How much is it on steam because Civ 4 Complete with CD can be bought online for just $15?

Yeah, if it was on sale then it would likely be cheaper but right now steam doesn't seem to be selling Civ 4 Complete so you have to buy Civ 4 basic with the expansion packs (or at least searching the steam store for "Civilization 4 Complete" didn't turn up any hits). Totaling up the costs currently listed on steam that would come to ~$36 so without a sale Steam isn't offering a good price. It's over double.

Great. I started off with 7 civs but now because of the revolutions and the barbarians turning into civs, there's 16 and it's back to lagfest. God damn A New Dawn.

It doesn't have to be Tribes. I know Boann would be up for it.

Alby, have you tried Fall from Heaven 2 or Rhye's & Fall of Civilization? Those are the two best mods for the game. Unlike all the shitty mods whose basic idea is to add 400 new techs, 600 new units, 200 new civilizations and 300 new buildings. Those end up being excessively complicated (and slow) without really changing the game experience much. On the other hand FFH2 and RFC are amazing.
Okay. I tried Rhye's and Fall. I only made it to the modern age before the lag got annoying. Here are my criticisms:

1) I really missed A New Dawn's special features such as automated border patrols. A New Dawn's unique unit graphics based on civilization was also really nice. It's the little stuff that I got used to with A New Dawn that really ought to be in this.

2) Ancient age too short. Problem with Civ in general is that the ancient period is just rushed through with very little content and the focus is entirely on the modern era. My first game, I played as Babylon. As soon as Persia formed, it declared war. The war itself wasn't very eventful. They tried to take my capital and then just sat in my territory until I mustered the forces to drive them out. The thing is, this war lasted for over 1000 years!!! What are turns like in Civ in the ancient period? Like 100 years per turn? Ridiculous. That's no fun, especially since ancient history is my interest. Mods like A New Dawn stretch out the ancient era and make it feel relevant. The Ancient Mediterranean mod is great in this regard but it obviously ends just shy of the Roman era.

3) Too deterministic. I had to stop my Babylon game. As soon as I had peace with Persia, it was 600 AD and the Arabs appeared with a ton of camel archers (what the hell is a camel archer, by the way? Video games really are atrocious for representing Middle Eastern militaries). I get why they're trying to have the game model real life but it's just too deterministic that pretty much Arabia has to form and I have to be incredibly on point to beat them back. This also means the Europeans will always be the most advanced by the industrial era which is a little against the spirit of civ. My second game, I played as India and my position meant that my game went the opposite of Babylon; that is, I never had any issues with super-Persians, super-Arabs, or super-Mongols showing up (not historically accurate here, is it? It's like the modmakers have no knowledge of Indian history) and just built quietly in peace. I zoomed through the tech tree as a result and saw all my neighbors were far more primitive. When I made contact with the Europeans, they were more advanced than my neighbors but still quite a lot behind me. I decided to just get railroads, combustion, flight, etc. as fast as possible and set my 18 population, wonder-filled cities to focus on research. About 50 years later, though, the Europeans are surpassing me with some techs. How the heck did that happen? No way unless there's a mechanic in the mod to make them more advanced. Again, too deterministic.

IIRC in the Rhye's and Fall mod they make you pay more for techs if you have more cities.
I had 4 cities.

Okay. Maybe the Europeans traded techs with each other? There are a lot of European civs.

In the UK it is £14.99, but it'll be far less (75% off isn't uncommon) during a STEAM sale that includes it (which is quite often). The Summer sale can't be far off...
STEAM Summer Sale in the UK atm.

Civ IV = £4.99, BTW = £2.99

To buy CivIII, IV and V with all expansions and DLC = £24.99

Easy to install, no faffing with patches and that inexpensive. Yes, I love STEAM.
