Default Pay as you go phone
So, as far as pay as you go phones there are a lot of offerings beyond the big 3.

I have some family that comes to the USA every year for a month and that is what they get. Though they use ancient phones from 2000. They need smartphones.

Who might offer the best coverage with a smartphone with a decent price?

They talk a lot so need minutes too. I figured just use Verizon but I wasn't sure if one of the smaller companys like Net10, Boostmobile, etc have good contracts to have just as good coverage and maybe offer more.

They pretty much travel anywhere and everywhere in the USA when they are here.

perhaps they use the crappy 2000 phone because with the smart phone they'll start getting stung data usage too.

do they NEED smart phones as it they've said "hummph you know what we need some smart phones"

or is it because you feel like they need upgrading >?

Metro PCS or something like that, maybe. No contract, $50 unlimited. Unless you meant those boxed phones u can get at walmart. Or, hell, doesn't walmart offer their own no contract service iirc, they have something like that that piggybacks one of the bigger networks?

Virgin Mobile is very reasonable as far as smartphone plans go.

Straight Talk. $45 unlimited everything. Downside is their android phones are stuck at 2x if you're on Verizon. No 3G. Next up would be Virgin.
