Default yet another reason to check the labels when you buy groceries...
as if the "kosher tax" wasn't bad enough...

(emailed to me from a friend)

Subject: FW: FW: MADE IN CHINA AND INDIA "GROWN IN PEOPLE POOP"
This was sent from a high school friend who lives in South America, but is very up to date with what goes on in Canada. Very interesting I will go check my cupboards

Like any alarmist email of these sorts it carries an undertone of xenophobia which is never healthy for humanity. However, it does reveal some interesting decisions by corporations that formerly made and prepared their foodstuffs in North America. Not only economic concerns
to our own economies but possibly concerns over standards of preparation that aren't as up to snuff as our own.... I checked some labels on food in my own refrigerator and was surprised and disappointed by discovering some origins of foods I had assumed were made in North America.

MADE IN CHINA AND INDIA ...LOOK EVEN MORE CAREFULLY AT LABELS NOW..

Well add Safeway brand to this list... couple of weeks ago I bought bread & butter pickles....they were disgusting, soft & mushy.....they were made in India . I checked a jar of the Safeway brand
relish (I bought it because I wanted a tall jar), made in India ! What the heck, don't we have cucumbers in Canada . Anyway, I returned the pickles to Safeway, no problem there, explaining the situation, person at customer service said "What?" Checked the label and said I would never dream they are made in India & I am not a pickle person but I just bought a jar to take to a function but I will bring them back tomorrow. I told her that I would call head office and also tell them that Safeway Canada should be made in Canada not India . Today, I phoned the head office customer service. I had a nice long & very funny chat with the rep. After telling my story, she said why are pickles made in India , what type of pickles were they...bread & butter. She said well I just bought a jar last night being true to my Safeway brand....but I never read the label. She could not believe that the pickles were made in India and said that she will return them, in awe she said "we have tons of cucumbers in Canada ". She said she was writing up two reports, one to Corporate and one to buyers with my concerns. We both had a good laugh when I said well there is some good in this -- I will be reading my Safeway labels and not assuming because it said Safeway Canada that it was Canadian produce. I told her I will not be buying any products like this. She was really funny, then she said what about the relish, I said well it was comparable with other no name products but I only bought it because I wanted a tall jar to put my Bick's relish in it but I will not be buying it again because it is made in India . She then said well, I am going to
write that one up as well.....she said I just cannot believe it!

Now you're telling me Bick's is not made in Canada? ....anyone got a canner? Time for a revolt! Imported food we eat - Interesting & scary food info. here . Look even more carefully at labels now .

Did you know, Green Giant frozen vegetables are from China and so are most of Europe 's Best. Arctic Gardens are OK. Never buy the grocery store garlic unless it is clearly marked "from USA " or Canada , the other stuff is grown in people poop (even worse than chicken poop).
Buy only local honey, much honey is shipped in in huge containers from China and re-packed here.
Cold-FX is grown and packed in China and is full of fecal bacteria. Doesn't work anyway, big scam. If the country of origin is not clearly marked beware...if unsure, ask an employee. Watch out for packages which state "prepared for", "packed by" or "imported by". Don't understand the lack of mandatory labelling in BC. especially the produce. In Ontario , the country of origin has to be clearly shown on the item in the store. Not sure about other provinces.

I go to the local farmers markets in season and keep a wary eye open the rest of the year. Worth reading, although I'm sure you already know at least some of this . . . I thought this was very interesting. I was surprised by the "NO NAME BRAND" and "PRESIDENT'S CHOICE" I thought they would be both the same.

Please read this very carefully, and read to the very bottom. Its of some importance for all of us.
How is it possible to ship food from China cheaper -- than having it produced in Canada or at least the U.S. ? FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN FROM CHINA ... SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS BUY THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE IS FROM CAL . Beware, Costco sells canned peaches & pears, in a plastic jar, that come from China . ALL "HIGH LINER" AND MOST OTHER FROZEN FISH PRODUCTS COME FROM CHINA OR INDONESIA .. THE PACKAGE MAY SAY "PACIFIC SALMON" ON THE FRONT, BUT LOOK FOR THE SMALL PRINT. MOST OF THESE PRODUCTS COME FROM FISH FARMS IN THE ORIENT AND THERE ARE NO REGULATIONS ON WHAT IS FED TO THESE FISH. (Recently a Montreal Gazette had an article by the Canadian Gov't how Chinese feed the fish... they suspend the chicken wire crates over the fish ponds, and the fish feed on chicken excrement. Canadian Government recommended and stressed NOT to buy any type of fish imported from China . If you search the internet what the Chinese feed their fish you'll be alarmed , eg. growth hormones, expired anti-biotics from humans, and never buy any type of fish or shellfish that comes from these countries... Vietnam , China , Philippines ...) Check this out you self. BICK'S HAVE RECENTLY CEASED OPERATIONS IN CANADA -- DON'T BUY THEM . Stienfeld's Pickles are made in India - just as bad!!! But many NoName pickles are made in Canada ... Another example was in canned mushrooms. No-Name brand came from Indonesia. Next to them were President Choice brand. Produce of Canada!! The P. C. went into my grocery bag. Also check those little fruit cups we give our children. They use to
> be made here in Canada in the Niagara region until about 2 years ago....They are now packaged in China ! While the Chinese, export inferior and even toxic products, dangerous toys and goods to be sold in North American markets, the media wrings its hands and criticizes the Obama Administration and the Harper Government for perceived errors. Yet 70% of North Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended!!

Well, duh. Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? SIMPLY DO IT YOURSELF, buy only stuff from CANADA & USA Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without. Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some North American farmer. Easter is just an example; the point is not waiting for the government to act.. Just go ahead and assume control on your own. Canadian Thermos bottles were made here for many years. Thermos sold out in the 1990's and now the bottles, those that keep our food warm or cold are now made in CHINA . We lost---about 200 jobs! THINK ABOUT THIS, If 200 million North Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favour...fast!! The downside? Some Canadian/American businesses will feel a temporary pinch from having foreign stockpiles of inventory. Just one month of trading losses, will hit the Chinese for 8%, of their North American exports. Then they will at least have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it. START NOW and don't stop. Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are intelligent Canadians / Americans, and NOBODY can take us for granted. If we can't live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives. . . WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!

yeah, when i buy frozen apple juice, i want frozen apple juice, not frozen apple juice + who knows what.

i notice some frozen apple juice cans say, "Made in China and WTF-stan" (i can't remember).

i guess that means they're making the packaging and want to cover all contingencies ?

margins on food were tight even when most of our food was made in the US.

I was still under the impression that unless you were shopping at the Dollar Store you did not have to worry about getting shit from China, The gloves are off now it's just a full on assault on our health.

Ok, explain to my non-american ignorance why would you want to buy canned food.

Except maybe green peas, or except maybe in rare instances when fresh is not available.

Fish from China is not good quality, everyone should know that. The best quality fish comes from Pacific Ocean, next is Atlantic ocean (people say that it has more mercury, and also there's higher chance it is farm raised, they just block a piece of water). Anything asian and you better know where it is coming from, chinese is likely low quality, unless you know a chinaman who can confirm.

But that's basics of food shopping

It's crazy how a mountainous country with over 1 billion people manages to export food. That alone is reason enough to be leery of it.

some are not readily able to do their own preserves, and still wish to have preps on hand. with an average of 3 days until the grocery stores are empty (in a SHTF scenario,) you should have a good 3 month supply of food for every member of your household (at least).

it may not be the best quality food, but you still have to eat.

Seriously, you have no canned items in your pantry?

What country are you in? I thought you were Canadian, perhaps I am wrong. Nevertheless, do you not prep food stuffs? If so, what foods & by what method if not canned items?

(really almost speechless here)...

I do have some canned food, mostly green peas, some canned meat. I don't usually eat it though unless in situations when you have no electricity for 3 days or a snow storm.

3 months worth of food? Nah, doubt it will be useful. Actually now that I think of it, I do have some water and various grain/cereals - buckweat, oats, rice.
Kasha is extremely good and nutritious food.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasha

I also buy honey, honey is a tricky product and raw doesn't go bad , has extremely large number of positive health effects, is antiseptic, etc. etc. I usually buy a can of a good one whenever I have a chance, but it is hard to identify a good product as in US it is mostly heated/processed and it is common to have large quantities of sugar added by cheating manufacturers.

My wife makes her own cereal, we don't buy the grocery one. Takes oats, nuts, honey and whatever else you want in it, and 2x10 minutes in oven.

What one really can do if one wishes is what ancients have been doing - that is sour or salty foods. Sauerkraut, sour cucumbers, basically sour anything, even watermellons. You can make that at home from fresh produce. Dried and/or salty fish. Older europeans make these at home sometimes.

What strikes me as a bit odd is that you guys think that in event of serious SHTF you are going to survive on your own.
That's a typical american individualistic attitude.

Not gonna work if we are talking about months.

You will have to have good connections where you live, so you can share with people. In my area I see lots of russian, polish and korean immigrants, they are fairly tough and had to survive things in the past. My two next door neighboors - one is a retired policeman, and the other is a retired guy who IMHO practices no-nonsense survival tactics - he's got a pickup truck, a small RV that he can pull, he heats a house with a wood stove (also THE lowest bill in the neighborhood), etc. So, me and him are stockpiling wood right now, we both have a stash good for 6 months of heating. I already had to bail my buddy out last winter with a small pile, his mcmantion has no electricity 4-5 times a year.

I am 5 minutes awat from a city border (15 minutes by bike), and not planning to move any further in the events of gas shortages - this is the most likely scenario that I've seen played in lots of countries during crisis, you aren't going anywhere from your far away farm in that case.
