Default Hypocrite...
Ron Paul, Social Security opponent, acknowledges he receives benefits

WASHINGTON – Ron Paul, a staunch opponent of federal welfare programs, acknowledged Wednesday that he receives Social Security checks, shortly after advocating that younger generations opt out of the program.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Paul was asked by Huffington Post’s Sam Stein whether he should set an example for younger Americans and opt out of the program entirely. Paul, refusing the notion, compared the program to other common goods such as the post office.

“Just as I use the post office, I use government highways, I use the banks, I use the federal reserve system, but that doesn’t mean you can’t work to remove this in the same way on Social Security,” the Texas congressman said. “In the same way with Social Security, I am trying to make a transition.

“I want young people to opt out of Social Security, but my goal isn’t to cut,” Paul said moments before.

Paul later clarified his remarks, saying: “I would preserve Social Security as best I can, but we want to get off.” He said he pays more into the system than he receives.

Why is he a hypocrite if he pays more than he receives? He is forced to pay, why can't he get some of it back?

I think we should be able to opt out, but what you have paid into it so far should be available for you.

He is a hypocrite because he still takes advantage of the system he is trying to destroy. A leader sets an example.

There isn't anything there. It's all printed/created digits.

How about this: by collecting from the system, he is helping to destroy it faster.

He also helps perpetuate the need for such a system. Remember, he is ultimately stealing from his grand kids, that is if the system was solvent.

Are you NOT going to collect your SS?

Ron Paul has already elected to not participate in the very lucrative .gov pension plan that was available to him, opting instead to be treated the way the rest of us are. We don't like it but WTF! We paid into it (against our will) so ya might as well try and get something back.

Or at least ensure that voting block the you wouldn't do away with it all together.

By accepting it.

I see what you are saying.... There are other things he doesn't take part in, I believe, like benefits congressmen receive. I for one will collect as I was forced to contribute. If they said today, we are ending it, I would be happy to
let go of what I have contributed so far and save my own money. However, if I am his age and contributed forcefully for that many years I am pretty sure I would collect too.

Calling that hypocritical is ridiculous. Do you conduct all of your transactions with precious metals and barter, or are you a hypocrite too? Even if you want to change the system, you still have to live in it. He'd be a damn fool to not take his SS.

Social Security enrollment makes the IRS have jurisdiction over you. If you have a social security number, you cannot 'unenroll' yourself.

I think RP's objection to Social Security is that it is a large feature of a collectivist government. He's not a hypocrite for collecting.

While on the subject, not to hijack the thread, but why do we have an ss? IMO it's because my parents got one for me. A recent forwarded email about it being forced upon people made me ask my mom if she was forced when I was born. She said no, but at the time she couldn't claim me on her taxes if I didn't have one. (great benefit?) couldm't I have a child and just not get a birth certificate or ss?

I am not sure, but the lack of SS might be a problem with public school enrollment (which would be a good thing, IMO).
