I've just seen a little gizmo someone's come up with, on the news. What it is is a little sensor that is put on the tarmac in a parking space that detects whether a car is there or not. This information is uploaded to the internet and then someone in a car, looking for a space, can instantly see which spaces are occupied and which are empty.

The catch is they also want to use this device to detect when a car has been occupying a space for longer than it should, and save money by employing fewer actual people to check cars.
