they are reporting on the news here that it has been solved. according to a bunch of scientists, clintonville is experiencing cryoseism as a result of a very early spring here:
A cryoseism, also known as a frost quake[1][2], may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice.[3] As water seeps down into the rock, it freezes and expands, putting stress on surrounding rock. This builds up until it is relieved explosively in a cryoseism.[4] Another form of cryoseism known as an ice quake, is a non-tectonic seismic event caused by sudden glacial movements, sometimes due to the formation of a thin veneer of liquid water under a glacier from surface melting. Usually, a glacier would stick to the rough bedrock, but the hydraulic pressure acts as a lubricant, allowing it to slide up to many metres at once.[5][6] This type of cryoseism can last for tens of minutes.[7] As the requirements for cryoseisms to occur are not yet defined, their prediction is still not possible and constitute a significant factor in structural design and engineering.[3] Links have been made between global warming and the frequency of cryoseisms.[7] apparently the effects in clintonville are exaggerated even furhter, as the town lies right on top of a large, underground, pure granite shelf. the water seepage is coming from the lake next to the town, they say. fwiw, i still think it's giant robots from mars waking up. |

USGS reports small earthquake near Wisconsin city plagued by mysterious booming noises
MILWAUKEE - Federal geologists confirmed Thursday that a minor earthquake occurred this week near the eastern Wisconsin city where researchers have been investigating a series of unexplained booming sounds. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 1.5 magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday just after midnight in Clintonville, a town of about 4,600 people about 40 miles west of Green Bay. Geophysicist Paul Caruso told The Associated Press that loud booming noises have been known to accompany earthquakes. He said it's possible the mysterious sounds that town officials have been investigating are linked to the quake. "To be honest, I'm skeptical that there'd be a sound report associated with such a small earthquake, but it's possible," Caruso said. Earthquakes can generate seismic energy that moves underground at thousands of miles per hour, producing a sonic boom when the waves come to the earth's surface, Caruso said. The U.S. Geological survey says earthquakes with magnitude of 2.0 or less aren't commonly felt by people and are generally recorded only on local seismographs. Caruso said the Tuesday earthquake was discovered after people reported feeling something, and geologists pored through their data to determine that an earthquake did indeed strike. Local residents have reported late-night disturbances since Sunday, including a shaking ground and loud booms that sound like thunder or fireworks. City officials investigated and ruled out a number of human-related explanations, such as construction, traffic, military exercises and underground work. The town has scheduled a news conference for Thursday at 6 p.m. but hasn't said what will be discussed. http://www.startribune.com/local/143878936.html |

update: they changed their minds. bunch of mini earth quakes instead. I still hold to the idea that the core is spinning slighty differently from the crust, so there are certain solid-to-solid interfaces where the grinding is occurring... making a groaning trumpet sound. Imagine a freight train moving 100 miles per hour down the tracks and then locking up all the brakes. The screech of steel and the vibration through the ground would be a miniature version of what could be happening in the earth. |
