Default Does anyone fly standby?
Has anyone flown standby before? What airlines have you flown and what kind of luck do you have? Ever done it on a holiday weekend?

There are some weekends where I wouldn't mind flying in to see my parents, but my schedule is such that it wouldn't bother me if I went to the airport and didn't get on a flight. Do airlines do any kind of standby flights where you just go to the airport and tell them you're interested in buying a really cheap ticket at the last minute if the flight doesn't fill up, or do airlines not do this?

I used to fly standby with American Airlines pretty frequently (probably 20 flights or so), haven't done it in years though. There was only one time I couldn't fit on a flight, but was still able to make one early the next morning. It's really nice, and if there's room in first class, they'll throw you in there too!

Yeah, they do just what you are saying. Used to do it with a friend that worked for AA back in college. (it was actually free, since he worked for them) Wear a suit, or at least a jacket/khakis because you don't want to be passed up if a spot is open in 1st because you are dressed down.
