Default Looking for a new pocket knife / multitool
Greets!

I need a new pocket knife/multitool for a very specialized application. Here's what I need:

ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
Long-ish (3.5 to 5.5 inch) NON-SERRATED blade, MUST be one-hand openable and lock open
Grippy handle surface, no "slick" swiss army type smooth plastic or smooth metal
Can and bottle opener
Phillips screwdriver
Size must be reasonably pocketable, pocket clip NOT required - but would be nice
HIGH quality, no chinese knockoff junk

NICE EXTRAS, BUT NOT ESSENTIAL
Saw
Scissors
Flat blade screwdriver
Corkscrew
Hex bit driver
Awl
Wire insulation stripper
Extra serrated blade or seatbelt cutter

DO NOT WANT
Pliers
Wire cutters
Tweezers/toothpick/magnifier/USB drive/other "Swiss Army Knife" gimmicks
Huge, bulky, complex folding mechanism... requiring many operations to get to blade or tools
Heavy or bulky tool, or one that needs a pouch for carrying and access

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Only one I've seen fitting that, one of the larger size lock blades.
"Swiss Army Knife". I like their quality and steel, one of the best
tools I have is the large swiss tool, one of the worst was the
leatherman wave, which I damaged cutting barbed wire, gerber and
swiss lived through it later as test.

I've got a wave. I don't think it meets all the criteria, smooth metal chassis etc. It doesn't get much work but certainly comes in handy.

The leatherman guys bought out a shooter specific model although it was had to tell difference between that and the wave.

What about SOG multi tools? Gerber always make good stuff.

OK...
After much research, it appears there are only 2 tools on the market that fill my requirements:

Victorinox One Hand Opening Trekker, with non-serated blade
Wenger Rangergrip 78

I've ordered both... they will be here Monday. I'll post a full review with comparisons after they arrive, and decide which I will keep and which I'll be returning.

That Wenger Rangergrip looks cool if you got the cash for it. Never seen it before.

http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-One...ef=pd_sim_sg_2
I was aware of this knife, but thought since it had tweezers & toothpick it was out.

I myself have the Gerber Crucial Tool.
Cheap, but OK.
I like having pliers.

It's not exactly what your looking for, but I've been happy with the Leatherman Super Tool I've been carrying since 1998. After around five years of ownership, I broke a plier jaw and sent it back under warranty. I had it back in a week and Leatherman had changed out all of the implements.

The blade is serrated.
They make both - a serrated and non-serrated version. Here's a link to the non-serrated variant:

I'll live with the toothpick and tweezers if the rest of it works out well!

I already have a "pliar" type multi-tool, a Swisstool X. I went through my share of Leatherman, Gerber, and SOG tools before I settled on the Swisstool X - it just worked right for me. Also, I've heard a LOT of bad things about recent Leatherman tools breaking, particularly around the pliar section... doesn't exactly inspire confidence!

I might try another SOG in the future, though... it's the one I miss the most out of all my past pliar-type multitools.

Sorry got my serrated/non-serrated models mixed up.

Toothpick I never had a use for.
Tweezers I have used twice to pull splinters out. Not that bad of an item to have.

I already do that.
Might as well tell you something about my specialized requirement...
I've been helping some friends lately with closed-circuit security camera installation at their houses, and on several occasions I've found myself either perched on a ladder or up in attics with only one free hand, needing a knife or phillips. I've had my Swisstool multitool with me, but I've found that it (just like most pliar-type tools) is rather difficult to deal with one-handed.
We'll see on Monday how well the two tools I'm giving a test run work out for this.
BTW, the bottle opener, as you might have guessed, is for the after-work beers!

MUT-600.pngI'm thinking about getting one of these MUT tactical tools. Kind of pricy at $120.00 but it looks like it's got a good selection of tools in it.

old steel,
Before you buy that, be aware that Tim Leatherman (president/CEO of Leatherman) is ultra-liberal and anti-gun.
Research it... it's easy to find.
Just one of MANY reasons I'll never own/buy another Leatherman tool.

I didn't know that, they have a good reputation for warranty,
no hassle, I have 2 leatherman products I am not happy with,
my wave didn't last past basic old rusted barbed wire, the
cutting edge of pliers is fine, no problem there, the problem is in the
the part that joins the pliars, it is amazing this can happen
to me, pliars do not open and close properly, they stick,
it has to be some serious design flaw they are aware of,
you would expect to damage another part of it, not the part
that is solid steel almost. At first I loved it, one hand open, light, locks,
etc, even bought some bits for it, very disappointed.
My first tool was a gerber almost 15 + years, it cut through
the same barbed wire easy, same with the larger swiss tool,
damaging them both was on my mind but I was mad, I wanted
to see what they were made of. They lived, no sweat.
I also have one of the fullest leatherman Juice, seemed like
a great tool, design, compact, components, etc, it is not that
great, the steel hasn't rusted but it gets scratched, how come
I don't have those same scratches on my other tools, they ain't
polishing type scratches on the pliars. The finish is not that great,
the swiss tools excel at this, fit and finish, quality, steel.
I have a leatherman mini super bright flashlight as a keychain,
its pretty tough, don't leave home without it.
