Tragedy struck again last night in Murrieta when an off-duty cop reportedly shot and killed a man at a local pub.

Murrieta police responded shortly before 8 p.m. to a shooting call at Spelly’s Bar and Grille off Murrieta Hot Springs Road. A white male was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds inside.

The killing was the second to rock the city in as many days. The hunt is still on for a man accused of stabbing 18-year-old Saskia Burke to death in her Murrieta home early Tuesday morning before assaulting her father and boyfriend.

The bar shooter, an off-duty Riverside County sheriff’s deputy, surrendered himself to police without a struggle at the front door, Lt. Tony Conrad said.

The suspect was detained and transferred to Murrieta police headquarters for questioning. The city police department is taking the lead in the shooting investigation with support from the county sheriff’s department.

A sheriff’s spokesman said the department had no comment on the incident and referred requests for information to Murrieta police.

Police shut down the pub’s parking lot and moved about 30 witnesses who were inside at the time of the shooting to a nearby Starbucks for questioning.

Chris Hull, a 39-year-old Temecula resident, said he was inside the bar and saw the shooting happen.

Hull said he witnessed a man walking up while Hull and a group of friends were playing darts. The man reportedly identified himself as an off-duty cop and started a discussion with the group about darts.

“We were playing darts, and he says 'I’m better at darts than you are,”' Hull said.

“My buddy says, ‘Aw, you suck at darts.’ (The man) says, ‘That’s why I’m a cop, I can do whatever I want to do.’”

Hull said his friend, identified only as Danny, asked the man, “Really, you can do anything?” The man then pulled out his gun, Hull said, and after the group repeatedly asked him to put it away he “pops three rounds into my friend Sam.”

Hull identified his friend as Sam Venettes. He didn't answer a request for Vanette's age or hometown, but said he was a "hardworking guy" who "works three jobs."

Police have not released any information on the name of the victim.

"I just watched the most horrific scene I've seen in my entire life," Hull told Patch.

"This is the worst day of my life."

The shooting was unrelated to the Tuesday stabbing death and ongoing manhunt for the suspect, Conrad said.

If that is true, the cop should be tied up and anyone who wished can come along and throw pointy objects at him. I would say the time alotment should be an hour for each shot he fired in the bar. If he survives, he is set "free".

What happened in that bar was what happened in the Ukraine in 1931 and 32 when the communists collectivised the farms. No one was armed but the communists who were in control. People should think about this and study history and prepare. The communists could do as they damn well pleased and so can the cops.

You make a very good point, however the decision to run that risk is a very grave one and the timing regarding doing so should only be done when moved by the Spirit - imo.

MURRIETA: Murder charge filed against off-duty deputy

Prosecutors filed a murder charge Friday against Dayle William Long, an off-duty Riverside County sheriff's deputy accused of fatally shooting a man in a Murrieta bar earlier in the week.
The Riverside County district attorney's office also filed a special circumstances allegation that Long discharged a firearm, causing the death.
Long was scheduled to enter a plea on the charge Friday afternoon in a Southwest Justice Center courtroom, but Judge Angel Bermudez postponed the arraignment at the request of the defendant's attorneys.
Deputy Public Defender Jeff Zimel sought the delay so he and his team can have more time to analyze the case.
"There's more to this story than what's been reported in the paper," Zimel said.
The shooting happened at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Spelly's Pub & Grille on Murrieta Hot Springs Road.
Murrieta police officers responded after receiving a call that a man in the bar had a gun. When officers arrived, Long was standing outside the bar and identified himself as an off-duty deputy.
Inside the bar, officers found the body of Samuel Vanettes, 36, of Winchester, who had been shot several times.
John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office, said Friday that the charges stemmed from what investigators learned in the aftermath of the shooting.
"According to witnesses at the bar, the victim did not show any aggressive behavior toward the defendant," Hall said.
He said Vanettes apparently was not involved in what has been described as an argument between Long and another customer, but intervened in an attempt to quell the dispute.
"He came in and was going to act as a peacemaker and ended up getting shot," Hall said.
Long is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at Southwest Detention Center in French Valley.
At the arraignment, he made his first appearance publicly since the shooting.
Through his attorneys, Long tried to have the news media prohibited from photographing him during the arraignment and also to be arraigned in a different courtroom from Bermudez's, which is where other inmates are frequently taken for court appearances. The judge denied both requests.
After briefly appearing in the doorway where inmates enter the courtroom, Long backed out, shielded by his attorneys, so that he could not be seen inside the courtroom.
Later, when the judge appeared, courtroom deputies escorted him inside while defense attorneys stood beside him, preventing clear views of the defendant.
Long was wearing a red jail uniform rather than the usual orange one, indicating he is being held separately from the general population of inmates.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Joe Borja confirmed that Long is in protective custody in accord with the jail system's policy for the incarceration of law enforcement officers.
