Default galaxy s2
OK, xperia arc returned (apart from poor battery life with any widgets running at all (they all seem to use the MediaServer application for some reason) it didn't always respond to your touch straight away and loading apps like firefox took ages. I've got a samsung galaxy s2 being delivered in 3-5 working days (nothing exact yet). What's the first things I should do to improve it?

Maybe a little harsh. What's the best website for the Samsung galaxy s2 community?

Ditch the Touchwiz launcher - get hold of something like launcher pro or ADW EX

Or for something different, Claystone beta is VERY cool. Not very optimised yet but the SGS2 should have the kahoonas to run it as-is.

And enjoy - its a very nice device!

XDA Developers... Since the SGSII is just being released, there's not a very well established "community." Even then, for device-specific discussion, XDA is hard to beat.

That said, I had one pre-ordered from Handtec there in the UK, since they're unlocked, etc. However, I cancelled my pre-order once I found out the UK models ship without NFC. Nobody's sure if it's just disabled or not included at all, so I'm waiting to find out.

still XDA...

u might wanna get rid of the touchwiz launcher if u don't like it. u can replace it with anyone of your choice. look around the xda forums. things like ADW (EX for the paid version) and Launcher Pro (Plus for the paid version) are reasonably fast and smooth altho ADW does support launcher themeing.

or if u had liked the launcher on the arc u can get that too.

make sure whatever that u get that's not from the market supports HDPI. really i can't stress that enough here

Claystone thread at XDA

Give it a try, needs a little setting up initially but is a very innovative way of doing things, rather than the wave of iOS type launchers out there.

He has an iPhone.

DM , just a suggestion, leave it stock for now and get used to the os and the way Android works. Then start to tinker with it once you're more familiar with it.

I can't se any reason to simply rooting an Android phone for the sake of it. My Nexus S is stock and fine the way it is. I do have my Blade rooted for hacking fun tho.

Recompile your OS with functional customizations baked in and get back to us about how it went... [thumbdown]

Plus, the iPhone 4 has miserable hardware in comparison to the SGSII. [yes]

@DM u need to remember tho that all manufacturers have a different implementation of things so the major portion of the experience might be coming from samsung's touchwiz and their customizations themselves and not a true android experience per se.

Truly awesome apps that require root:
SetCPU = allows you to underclock (or even overclock) your phone. Can greatly improve battery life.

Wifi Tether = Makes your phone into an access point without having to pay the extra $ to the carrier for the same function.

Root uninstaller = allows you to uninstall built-in apps that normally can't be uninstall any other way.

Heard Touchwiz 4 is quite good, so I'd say try it out first before you go replacing it.

XDA is definitely the community you want to be in for all your Android needs.

I'm jelly, SGSII won't be out in North America for a while...

Cheers, but as Chaz mentioned I've already got an iPhone4 from work. I used to have an iPhone as my own phone as well but it seems daft having two of the same. That's the kindest way people put it anyway.

Cheers, I like the arc interface but it seems to have a few too many problems I can't get over.

This may be my skewed view of Android tbh. Using the Neuxs one then the Nexus S I don't need the bottom two.

I currently own a Palm Pre 2, but i fancy an android phone. Problem is when i tried Galaxy S2 it was a pretty horrid experience. Why is it the HTC interface of Android is so much nicer than the Samsung Variant?

Maybe i should look at HTC Sensation
