Default First Woolworths, then a couple of other shops I've never heard of and now Zavvi
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7798973.stm

In case you didn't know Zavvi used be Virgin Megastores.

With so many big names going under I wonder who will be next. They said on the radio the other day that a possible 15 well known stores could get in to trouble.

I went shopping today and saw a sign on the Zavvi store window. They said that they're continuing trading but they will no longer do refunds, offers and other stuff I couldn't remember.

They didn't even accept my student card. [thumbdown]

DSG are highly likely to go into administration, so that's PC World off and away, I reckon mid January. Home Retail Group should weather the storm; their thorn is Homebase.

Apparently Zavvi aren't honouring gift vouchers. If they were bought from the 27th November you can write to the administrators for a refund, but if they were bought before you have to write and ask for the claim to registered as an unsecure claim! Like someone said on another site, "If I had a £50 voucher I'd just walk in, pick up 50 quids worth of goods and then chuck the voucher on the counter and walk out.

Just to see what they would do. Bet staff are disgusted, they probably wouldn't care....."

DSG must be massive there would be massive job losses if they fall over [shocked]

One of the main reasons that these big chains are in trouble is that their profits go to the shareholders, whilst they use bank loans to fund expansion and running costs. Once we enter an environment where loans dry up, these companies are in trouble as they are not "cash-rich" - they re-invested little or none of their profits.

Its a win win situation for the shareholders though, as they get maximum profits, and are at the top of the pecking order to walk away their money if things go pear shaped, leaving everyone else in the crap.

In essence many of these companies were nothing more than "hollow-shells" - that collapsed like packs of cards when times get tough.....

My problem is with the stuff being mis-sold by ignorant sales people who spurt out complete BS.

I used to have to buy the odd thing from their business department (which can, actually, be well priced for certain things)... walking through their sales department... the number of times I pissed salesmen off by correcting them to a customer... calling them on blatant lies.

I don't blame the salesmen, I blame the management... I had friends (2) who had their job applications rejected because they knew too much about / had too much experience with computers.

On another note - this is a fantastic time to be a student!

I hope PCW doesnt go under. It is very useful at times when I cant be bothered to wait for delivery from online, and wait around for the courier/postman. Quite often their prices are good if you reserve online first. I will be very upset if PCW goes.

That got me banned from my Local PC world for quite sometime, As I would overhear some conversation between a member of sales staff and a customer and when I heard any "porkies" I would chip in with some banter, usually along the lines of "Thats a complete rip off, buying onlne elsewhere will save you £??? whatever amount of money, Or hearing staff telling customers that a 3Ghz celeron is faster than some AMD single core at 2.4Ghz or something like that, or some other such rubbish.

I know some people are dumb and deserved to be ripped off, but when some old man and woman of about 80-90 years old are being ripped off to the tune of several hundred quid, I feel like screaming out loud, that its cheaper at such and such place like ebuyer or aria etc.
Just really pisses me off. [cursing]

(might be my grandad or something).

If the stock in my local PC World is anything to go by they would be downgrades.

lol....I know what you mean, my local store still sells budget video cards for about 4 times as much as you'd pay online.

Might be worth getting a 24-26" monitor from them if they go under though, I saw a nice 24" samsung for under £230 there recently.
