The Colossus of Rhodes. Such a shame that it didn't survive the ravages of time, it was what apparently inspired the Statue of Liberty. In fact, many Greek statues and works are awe inspiring, best holiday i've had, travelling around Greece seeing the sights, amazing place.

What makes you say that? I'm currently in the middle of a book about The Seven Wonders of the World, but haven't got to the chapter about that yet. What is probably true is that it didn't stand astride the harbour entrance like it is often portrayed. Of course it did. There are detailed records of it's construction, destruction and the fact that it laid on the ground for over 800 years with various historical figures of note commenting on it. It is not arguable that it never existed, but it didn't stand astride the harbour like was originally believed. I have been to Rhodes many times and my family originated there (you can research the origins of my last name). I have been to the old town docks (the supposed location) and there is no official spot where the statue was, no record of the pillars the statue stood upon, no remaints of the statue, etc. In fact, when I asked the locals where statue once stood, they said, "Wherever you can buy the most expensive Collosus T-shirt." I understand the above paragraph is all conjecture, so take it as you will. But, there is a good chance it was all BS. It's possible... Fatima, Portugal is a popular tourist location too, but what are the chances any of that happened? |

The height, location, and overall magnitude of the structure were probably greatly exaggerated. |
