I thought it was pretty good. Still not at the level of Season 1 or 4 but I liked it.
Season 5 was great until the last episode. They cleaned everything up into this nice neat little package with a bow on it and it just pissed me off. No risks were taken, especially compared to Season 1 or the Season 4 finale. Not to mention the fact that the S5 finale was full of plotholes. Plus the whole Deb/Dex will she/won't she find out is way overplayed and frankly soap-operish at this point. How long are they going to string us along on that plot point, seriously? Still, liked the premiere. It had good humor and Edward James Olmos is amazing. His voice is so powerful. This season definitely has potential, but if they make Dexter religious I'm going to be pissed. |

Not bad, but the "Jock" was a horrendous actor. The dialogue between he and Dexter in the end was so appallingly cheesy. I'm sure the season will improve but they tried to force the religious angle in too many scenes to make it believable. There's about 5 other situations I could name just from the first episode that are as bad as this one. No, TV isn't reality, but Dexter (the show) has gotten sloppy. It's riddled with plotholes and unrealistic scenarios that the early seasons just didn't have. As I said earlier, it's still a fun watch and I enjoy the show but it's a shadow of what it once was and is far from being "great" any longer. My interest in the character progression of Dexter and the amazing performance by Michael C Hall is what keeps me watching. |

I don't think the focus on religion is to do with Dexter finding faith, it more to do with Dexter having faith thrown at him in the form of the new serial killer in town. Dexter will, without fail, find some way to form a relationship with them.
Not sure if it'll get much better though, I had thought season five was enough to end it. |

Not to mention that it's totally out of character for Dexter to kill someone AT the reunion he's attending WHILE it's going on. In reality everyone at the reunion would be questioned over the missing man, his texts would be traced to the girl Dexter got the BJ from, and she'd claim her phone went missing right after being with Dexter. Well first off, he has murdered numerous people where the are plot holes and it is unrealistic that he got away with it. Also, he murdered the guy at the end of the episode and an investigation didn't even occur. Secondly, all the emphasis they put on "how great life is going" in the VO, throughout the episode, is possibly foreshadowing of him being caught or figured out. Over the seasons he has become more and more comfortable and in turn sloppy. Dexter is religious? How retarded. He constantly ridicules it in previous seasons and all the sudden he falls into it? Anyway, can't wait to see more of this season this Sunday evening. [thumbup] |

Everything you mentioned, I think, is the point. There's tons of plotholes and cheesy/sloppy/bad writing in the past few seasons, whether they involve Dexter or not. Google 'season 5 plotholes' for quick reference if you don't believe me. This has gone from an A caliber show to a C caliber show rather quickly. |

You're giving the show too much benefit of the doubt. It's just sloppy writing. Not a purposefully sloppy lead character. |

One episode in, we simply don't know how his latest murder or the rest of the season will pan out. Here's a great one from this past episode: So, they happen to find a dead hooker that is partially missing a tooth. Dexter instantly connects this to some random Oregon-based serial killer from the 80s. Now, this serial killer that never got caught happens to be one of the serial killers Dexter most obsessed over as a kid. Oh, and he just happened to have retired to Miami, fancy that. Then Dexter happens to be right on assuming the guy is in a nursing home and sure enough, happens to be at the very first one Dexter decided to check. All in a few hours of work. Strong luck. This supposedly brilliant killer performed countless murders and has evaded authorities for 30 years was caught in a matter of hours by Dexter. Oh well, I've accepted that the show has declined in quality and I'm enjoying it for what it is. I like Mos Def a lot and the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse ending was very cool and reminiscent of the Ice Truck Killer days. Also, my theory is that Edward James Olmos' character is a figment of Colin Hanks' imagination. His 'dark passenger', if you will. Notice how he hasn't interacted with anyone, and hasn't helped Colin in any of his tasks? He just watches and commands. I'm really thinking that's going to be the twist this season. |
