Default Jazz Journalist Awards
The 2010 Jazz Journalist Awards presentation is next week June 14th in NYC. Interesting list of nominees:
http://www.jjajazzawards.org/p/2010-nominees.html

With the talk about jazz blogs, it's interesting to see that one of the (newer) categories is

34. Blog of the Year
The Gig, Nate Chinen
A Blog Supreme, Patrick Jarenwattananon
Do The Math blog and webzine, Ethan Iverson
JazzWax, Marc Myers
Rifftides, Doug Ramsey

The nominees for Jazz Photo of the Year aren't too shabby either ... N

Nice to see Darcy Argue on the list for half of the awards! From the lower mainland no less.

If you have checked out the Freddie Hubbard CD that's up for "Historical Recording, Boxed Set, or Single CD Reissue of the Year" it's a must. Roland Hanna, Ron Carter and Lou Hayes. Pretty good band.

Gotta pick that up that new/old Freddie CD...

I also very highly recommend one of the Record of the Year noms:

Esta Plena, Miguel Zenón, Marsalis Music

Alto Saxphonist and composer Zenon layers progressive jazz on a foundation of one of Puerto Rico's two national rhythms, Plena (the other national rhythm being Bomba). Featuring the ridiculously unsung pianist Luis Perdomo, Hans Glawischnig on bass, Henry Cole on drums, and a trio of Plena drummers/singers.

Nice to hear that Robin D.G. Kelley's definitive biography on Monk (THELONIOUS MONK The Life and Times of an American Original) won book of the year. This book belongs on any serious jazz lover's or musician's bookshelf.
