Default Roy Bull
I am seeking information on the whereabouts of my second cousin Roy Bull who emigrated from England to Canada in the 1950s following a spell with Oscar Rabin playing Baritone Sax. On your excellent website I have found that he played sax in Vancouver in a couple of bands and recorded with them.
I know that on retirement he went back to England and in the 1980s lived in Yorkshire, but I can't trace him there now. It's just possible that he didn't like life back here and returned once more to Canada.
I'd be very grateful for any information or contacts.

Thanks

Hi Phil....... Don't know if I can be of any help to you, but I knew Roy (slightly)...... played with him a few times when I lived in Edmonton back in 1960 with Tommy Banks big band..... I ran into him quite by accident abt 4 yrs ago...... he was subbing for someone in a rehearsal band that I had gone out to listen to. After that I tried to contact him & someone told me that he was living in the West end of Vancouver (Eng. Bay area)....for all I know he may still be in that area of the city.... I would have to see if he is listed in the Vanc. phone directory & at the moment I don't have a phone book nearby.....but I can do this if you would like....let me know.
Regards...... John Dawe Richmond BC

That's very interesting news John and I would indeed be grateful if you could look him up.
It seems as though my surmise that he had returned to Canada could be fact if he was living there and not just visiting.
Thanks again

There's a Roy Bull exactly one block from me. Check the phone book.

Forgot to mention that the listed address is in the West End, where John thought he might be living. I'm very curious because if he lives that close to me it's possible I see him around . . . who knows?

If it is the Roy Bull I am seeking, he will be in the region of 80 years old now, and surely retired from active playing. But then again we have musicians here such as Harry Gold and Humphrey Lyttleton who continued well past that age.

Hi Phil...... Roy lives at the same address he was at 5 yrs ago...... I talked on the phone with him this morning.... he's not aware of any cousins he may have in the UK & I had forgetten to write your name down (ha ha)..... here is his phone number & address:

Apt. # 503, 1740 Comox St.
Vancouver, BC ( sorry I don't know the Postal code)

Phone :: (604) 633 - 0968
He has quit playing both baritone sax & tromb. & has taken up guitar which he just plays for fun.
Give him a call ...he is anxious to know what is up.
Best regards, Phil

That's great news John - many thanks.
In the absence of an email address I think I shall write to him. I'm a complete Wally when it comes to international calls and the 8 hour time difference is an obstacle.
He's quite correct in that we have never met but I did meet his mother on several occasions, when (knowing I was a BigBand jazz fanatic) she always talked about Roy.

Thanks again

Phil, I'm Roy's son ... now living in Tokyo. I just chatted with him on Skype a few minutes ago, and he said he'd be happy to talk with you. He remembers visiting your family in Rotherham a zillion years ago.

He and my mom have email, but I'd rather not post it here. Write to me at my website and I'll pass it on. They also have Skype, so international calling is free if you have that too ...

(I hadn't known much about this forum, and was notified about this thread by Guy MacPherson yesterday. It's been interesting browsing through the various threads, seeing names that I remember from my days as a (very) peripheral member of the Vancouver music scene ...)
