Began driving around 13 or 14, with my mom or dad, when we would drive around neighborhoods (low traffic..) looking for houses. Got my permit the same year, since back then the driver's age in New Mexico was 15. Got my license the day of my 15th and the Miata soon thereafter
![]() Now I drive a Trooper. It's funny how life regresses. |

I'm assuming many of us didn't actually begin driving the day we turned 16. Some of us may have begun before, say, around 15, in empty parking lots. So, with that in mind, how old were you when you learned to drive?
I'm turning 15 on Wednesday, and my parents said they'll start teaching me over the summer, probably in July. It's so close, yet so far ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I didn't quite learn to drive - I learnt to offroad at the age oif 15. That is, the Land Rover in a tropical rainforest, in 4X4 and in low range, in a steep hill, about 3 meters from a cliff behind me, My Dad taught me how to take off when going uphill in the mud in a 2.5Ton car. I spun the wheels for over 30 Meters but I didn't let it roll down into the cliff. Eventually I learnt to controll tha clutch really well, so within a month I learnt how to rock crawl and ford through water and not too far afterwards I learnt the art of moving on 3 wheels and even 2 wheels. I became a pretty experienced offroader before I was 16.
When I was 16 I learnt to drive in a place much more difficult than that - the city. More precisely a crazy city like Bogota where you have to fight for your space, stick your bumper up to the car infront in intersections if you want to get through. The art of defensive driving and so on. Then at 17 I learnt to drive on winding twisty roads, where buses full of people, doing over 120km/h overtake you in a blind curve and attempt to through you off the road, where people move really slowly infront of you but when you get a half decent place to overtake they accelerate when you attempt to do so, and the art of keeping a 2.5 tonne beast loaded with 7 passengers and luggage, powered by a 1950s 2.25 Liter engine at speed through the curves so that momentum isn't lost. Finally, at the age of 18 I learnt to drive in a country where people know how to drive and are courteous and respect the rules, where you no longer have to fight your space, and the art of driving in a fuel efficient way, and driving an automatic car. Although I'm only 19, I would consider I have enormous experience in driving because I mastered pretty rough driving conditions, but still, when I take my car out each day, I am an inexperienced driver that has to pay extra attention, because I dont think I am a better than average driver in normal conditions. |

i began driving in parking lots when i was about 12, stayed there until i got my learners, at 15, and now at 16 am a driving man.
i agree driving really isnt quite all that fun particularly. i find it very tiring snce i live in a city and do mainly city driving, which is constantly being on edge since you realize most people are nit wits, plus there really isnt any good roads to drive on where i live, oh well the freedom still make sit worth it, and maybe some day ill live in a place where the roads are made up of twists an turns, and the term speed limit is unknown. at least i love my car though, so it helps add a bit to driving |

When I was 15 my dad used to let me drive in empty parking lots. Later my mother would let me drive up my street after we had just finished shopping. I got the hang of it pretty early and in all of these years I have not had a single accident or run in with the law despite on numerous occasions going well above 50 kms past the posted speed limit and drifting on nearly every corner I get my hands on.
