![]() Quote, originally posted by Reppu »Snip.... By the way, what's the difference you english speakers make between 'spanish' and 'spaniard'? I have never known that..... I think it's this. 'Spanish' refers to something (or someone) from Spain. 'Spaniard' refers only to a person from Spain. Luckily you are not from Scotland ![]() Scot Scotsman Scottish Scotch ![]() |

50% Irish (father is from ireland)
50% decendant of a whole bunch of people from a whole lot of different places. Amongst them my mother's foreparents include people from (these are actual direct foreparents whom my family has mantained records of) Germany/France (alsace to be specific), Grenada, Jamaica, India, Panama, Spain, Cherokee (who can be traced to NC and then marched on the trail of tears to Oklahoma), Oklahoma/North Texas good'ole boy (who in turn were mostly of Irish decent), and quite likely your average Latin American spanish/native mestizo. On my father's side I am technically 1st generation American (although he left Ireland as a very young boy and doesn't really remember living there). On my Mothers side, although she can trace her family in the american continents back a few hundred years, I am also, technically 1st generation (re-introduced) American. BTW, My wife is Vietnamese of Chinese ancestry and was born in Laos. |

Hmm, I'm half Puerto Rican (my fathers ancestry is Corsican, Spanish, and what was left of the indiginous islanders) and Spanish (yes, from Spain). It's funny though, my last name is Italian and you should see the interesting looks when people meet me for the first time when I interview them.

My looks? Not sure what people mean by "Hispanic"" looks, but here is my experience. I'm not exactly white, but rather more of a tan color. Kind of like a mediterranean person whos been out at the beach. My hair is wavy, but I keep it cut really short, so you can't tell. When I travel in Latin america, people refer to me as white, but when I'm in north america, most people can't seem to peg me comfortably into any one group. It's happened to the point, that in college I was invited to rush both traditional (white) fraternities as well as a couple of the black ones (but joined neither). I guess you can say I have that "generic foreigner look" (Not entirely unlike fezz in the 70's show, but taller, lighter colored, shorter hair, and with a mild southern accent). When I hang out with hispanics, everyone assumes I'm hispanic, but the same thing happens when I've been around Arabs, Filipinos, and native americans. It's kind of funny, since my name is very irish, and my dad's looks are a charicature of the stereotypical irish man (shorter, blondish brown hair, blue eyes, a well defined belly, a nose that turns red when he drinks, and a rather scrappy disposition). People that meet me over the phone always expect to see someone that looks like him, yet are very surprised when they meet me - to which I reply, that I must be one of those southern irish folks, which usually gets a laugh.
The funny things is that my brother looks just like my dad only taller and with green eyes, and my sisters are all somewhere in between the two of us. Funny how genetics works. |
