Thats almost exactly how the book went.
Hm, i guess that should be a good thing.

Apparently the author as pretty much given up on finishing the series any time soon?

I was looking at starting the books but didn't because of fears it may never finish.

The 5th book is out in a month, there are to be 7 total.

It isn't that he is against writing the books, it is just that they are very, very long books and he likes to write different things/edit other peoples work in between as a break from the series.

What i am unsure about though, is that in book 4 the dragons are still pups. How the eff are they going to fight the white walkers at the wall/north and reconquer dany's kingdom? It seems book 4 is ~ 2 year or so after book 1. Where is the 10 year gap necessary for the dragons of the world to return and mature?

Yes, the book is very good. It looks like the show is matching each season with a book; season one is book one, season two is book two, and so forth.

Bit of a late bump - it's finally made it to our shores and seems well worth while so far - double episode to start and much of the main plot and characterisation is getting established.
Looking forward to some of the sub plot twists and turns.
