UARS
Those interested in it's re-entry, if you're in it's orbit path (see below) you may be lucky enough to see it's burn up.

They're expecting it to land in the Pacific now, two more orbits and it'll be over Europe, though...
I'm off to bed - I'll find out what happened tomorrow. |
Can't be too long now, it's lost 15km in the last few hours.

NASA’s decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell back to Earth between 11:23 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 23 and 1:09 a.m. EDT Sept. 24. The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California said the satellite entered the atmosphere over the North Pacific Ocean, off the west coast of the United States. The precise re-entry time and location of any debris impacts are still being determined. NASA is not aware of any reports of injury or property damage http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/uars/index.html |
This caused a bit of a stir at work. We're probably about the biggest satellite tracking station in the world. The BBC, Sky, and numerous radio stations came too, I had a pretty frantic day.
Edit: yeah came down about 04:16z give or take 53 minutes, officially. |
Purportedly video of it falling from Canada in the SE sky.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-201...ught-on-video/ I am no scientist, but it passes my eye test. Looks like a night time version of what happened to the space shuttle over where I live. Nice grab. Skip ahead to where changes his perspective at around 40 sec for the best shots. Definitely expand the video, you cannot see much otherwise. Also, you will hear him say it is 22nd, but she corrects him so it should check out. |
