Right, so is there a reference anywhere that says Michael Stipe said not to judge Shiny Happy People by itself unless heard in the context of the album?

You're ragging on Golem for dismissing REM based on his experiences of the band with the seemingly pompous reasoning of not judging anything unless you've heard a whole album.
Music is subjective, if you like something then great. But to take that and try and belittle people who don't by using some Sparafucilian logic just annoys me.
That would be like judging the flaming lips on She Don't Use Jelly, or David Bowie on just the stuff he did with the tin machine. Gollem is welcome to his opinion, but everyone else is also welcome to point out that that opinion is not very informed.

Person A: I've heard 3 songs by XYZ and don't like them.

Person B: You're wrong. I've heard 3 albums by XYZ.

Informed or not, you can't diss Person A for having a different opinion.

I haven't dissed him. Im just saying for a group that has 15 albums over 30 years, to pick 2 radio songs that appealed to the masses as their barometer... well it just tells me that Gollem probably doesn't know very much about music.

I mean, the beatles wouldn't be considered to impressive if all you ever heard from them is their 1st ep. I don't like doo-wop music.

I was never a huge REM fan or anything, but they had an effect on american bands in the 90's. Just as Nirvana, who's album Nevermind was released 20 years ago this week, has an effect on bands today.

It has been used all of 7 times this year on FM. It will show up, more than that on the search, but that is because of quotes, etc. I guess you and I have a different view of what overuse is.
Now, I in no way meant exactly a year, more in general usage, but seeing as you want to be pedantic about it, it's appeared in 20 threads in the past year, if you include misspellings by searching for *sinine

As I remember, the word was used a couple of times a few years ago and ever since then it's been banded about frequently. I have not seen it used outside of these forums more than 2 or 3 times in the same number of years. If you introduce vocabulary to a closed community, it will become a part of their parlance, and that has been the case here.

I promise this word has been a part of my lexicon since mid 90's. I have used it here before. Maybe I am your zero point case
