Default Indiana school board: "Cursive writing optional"
Other than signing my name, I haven't used cursive writing since probably junior high. What's the point?

Cursive is one method of writing. As long as students still learn how to write, who gives a flying **** how they do it?
Print characters are just not as fast.

Cursive is practical for exams and so many menial tasks.

What is there to lose in teaching them?

I've never had trouble writing notes in print.

Did you just argue that cursive is easier/faster and therefore better than print writing for note-taking? Seriously?

The point is exactly that you've mentioned. Use the kid's time at school to make them do stuff they wouldn't. You've learned on your own easily, they will.

Let's teach them how to send an SMS, this is how they communicate!!!
So instead of teaching them sex ed we should teach them about polka?

Not even close to be relevant.

They're going to learn about sex on their own time anyway. Might as well teach them something they don't care about instead.

Sex ed is related to safety and health, it is VITAL. You teach them what abuse is, how to seek help if it happens. You teach them not to be ashamed of their sexual orientation, what safe sex is, etc.

This is all stuff we should MAKE SURE they know as soon as they develop a potential for sexual activity, and perhaps even before (esp. abuse).

I think they can figure out what rape is and what STD's are on their own. Some of them have religious beliefs that tell them to be ashamed of their sexual orientation, but I'm not surprised you'd disrespect other people's cultural background.

No.
How did you find out about sexual abuse?

Why do the vast majority of victims still don't speak out?

Why are gay boys still being bullied and pushed around?

Most of my college courses had computers in the room (since I was a programming major), and as a result I spent 90% of my class time playing minesweeper.

I don't remember. I think it's pretty obvious what sexual abuse is.

Why do the vast majority of victims still don't speak out? Are you suggesting they don't know they've been abused because they didn't go through sex ed?

Why are gay boys still being bullied and pushed around? How could sex ed stop bullying? Even if the teacher says there's nothing wrong with being gay, is that really going to stop the kids from stigmatizing homosexuality?

Okay then. I'd rather not derail the discussion of how useful cursive is.

Cursive for exams? Are you serious?

Most teachers and professors I've had PROHIBITED cursive for written essays. Cursive is a nightmare to read.

I don't see why not teaching cursive is a benefit to anyone, least of all the students.

Because they could spend their time learning about more important things. Such as evolution and rational thought. As an educator I feel that getting bedrock things down, like actually learning to write cursive is more important than pretty much everything else. And that includes typing.

Cursive doesn't take long. I learned it at 6 in the afternoons after school. Are you suggesting we should teach evolution to 6 year olds?
