What's a good device for my Mum to back up her stuff?

She's got a load of recipes on her laptop. They only come to a few megabytes though. She was thinking of using a USB drive to back them up. What do you think?

Email.

Just get her a memory stick. £3.99. Job done.

Yep. Free to use up to 2GB of storage I believe.

Nice and simple as well.

Yep 2GB free, auto syncing with any local machine(s) as well as being backed up and accessible (privately or publicly) online. I used it to sync my work PC, home PC, back up, and online share files.

Cheapest I guess would be CD's.

Podosinovik 12-16-2010 01:50 AM

Memory stick and/or internet service provider like dropbox or keepandshare. :)

weaddercaps 12-16-2010 03:49 AM

auto syncing with something like dropbox is probably a good idea. You can then keep her username and password safe in-case she blows up her computer one day and you know how to retrieve it.

This all depends on how she connects to the internet though. If it's frequently and not dial up then this should be reasonable option.

For something like a laptop I would avoid the USB stick thing as I'm sure it will get unplugged and forgotten.
If it was a desktop PC then you can do the USB thing or install a spare HDD you might have and I have a batch file to run xcopy on startup that always backs up any new data I made the last time I used my PC.

Raid 1. Set it and forget it.

hard copy, memory stick(s), CD, of site storage, copies on other PCs in the family, etc.
I'd use at least three backups, if it's important to her!
