You're not supposed to use washing up liquid, it's bad for your car.

Is it acidic or something?

it is just considered a strong cleaning agent for cars so it will remove the wax that may have been on it. It is fine if you are going to re-apply everything, but for a quick wash, you want something specifically for cars so that your wax isnt removed from the wash

It can also contain amonia and other things that speed up oxidisation.

I use Mother's and Meguiars cleaner products for the interior and cleaner/polish/wax.

Then, and you will thank me for this later, Sprayway Glass Cleaner for the windows.

Seriously, try Sprayway... everyone.

EDIT:
The reason that people say dishwashing soap is bad, is because it removes wax and clear coat. The truth is, all soap and rubbing with a sponge will remove car wax. Lots of professional car show winners exclusively use dishwashing liquid on their cars.

If I would have a car in mint condition, I would take the McQuiers products and spent several hours to even make the car look better than showroom condition.

Right now, all I use is Rain-X and wash it in a carwash.. use window cleaner for inside.

Sprayway is awesme, didnt they have the orange cans?

Howmuch do they set you back.. and also.. is it a white foam coming from it?

When we still had to use films in graphic industry we used that stuff for camera lenses etc.. it's THE BEST OF THE BEST cleaning material for glass ! [thumbup]

Not too worried about the paint - one car is over 30 years old and the other 20.
I AM fussy about the glass, though, as I consider seeing where I'm going to be important.

With new(er) cars I did look after the paintwork, etc - whatever was in the shop.

I've friends and aquaintances who regularly use claybars (?), toothbrushes, diapers, etc, for keeping their cars pretty - but then, some are RS AUDIs, Porsches and other late model Euro's, so it's to be expected.
McGuires seems to be mentioned a lot.

I use strictly Meguiars for everything (well, with exception of Invisible Glass).

And no, car wash liquid should not remove wax (certaily not synthetic wax). The key is not to rub. The weight of a heavy sponge (and please use microfiber only) is more than sufficient to clear superficial dirt off the car. Anything that requires rubbing should be clayed off, not rubbed off with a sponge.

Basically, for someone who lives in a house and has access to a hose, the appropriate steps for paint maintenance and cleaning are:

1. Every week/two weeks max: wet the car, wash with car wash liquid (soak in foam first), rinse with water 2X, then dry. Optional, but recommended: apply polymer water-repellant (such as Meguiar's Ultimate Quick Detailer) after the car is dry.
2. Every month/6 weeks: wash the car, clay with car clay bar, wash second time, re-apply wax.
3. Every 4-6 months: wash the car, clay, wash second time, clean paint with paint cleaner, wash third time, re-apply wax.
4. Every year: wash the car, clay, wash 2nd time, clean paint with paint cleaner, polish with the smallest grit polish (such as Meguiar's SwirlX), wash 3rd time, apply wax, re-apply 2nd coat of wax 2 hours later.
5. Every other/every 3rd year: wash the car, clay, wash 2nd time, clean paint with cleaner, polish with abrasive compound (use random oscillating polisher, not to be done by hand), then with polishing compound, wash twice or three times to ensure all the compound is washed off, then apply wax 2X.

For care of interior I use Meguiars Tech Protect, Meguiar's Gold Class Rubber/Vinyl protectant, and for Leather I use Leatherique 1/year, and Lexol Cleaner and Lexol Conditioner every 2 months or so. And of course I use brushes to get the dust out of crevices, with a vacuum (small attachment) to vacuum up the dirt.

Why does noboby go to the car wash? For less than a fiver I get my car hand washed while I wait. A car is a tool. Spending hours cleaning it is like spending hours cleaning your fridge.

Meguiar's and Mothers pretty much exclusively.

Pretty much the biggest easiest thing to improve the look of your car is having clean tires. I use No Touch (Costco 4 pack)....you just spray the foam on and walk away.

Also I clay every year or two, the top surfaces (hood, truck, etc) can really have a nasty film of built up junk like pollen. When your car is clean, the feel should be completely smooth - otherwise get a clay "bar".

For some people, a car reflects who they are, is an asset they wish to look after, a hobby and/or they just like to keep it clean and shiny.
Hate to think what your fridge looks like...

Dawn soap. I think all the bad stuff they say about it is a crock.

That is really all my moms van has been washed with and it has 200,000 miles on it. Might have been waxed a few times, maybe.
Car still looks good.
