Default A staple has fallen inside my macbook pro
Someone has just passed a document to me and a staple fell out of it during the transfer. It has fallen into the gap between the hinge of my MBP screen and the air vents inside it and seems to have disappeared into the MBP itself. Any ideas how I can get it out, and if not, how I can stop it blowing up my MBP at some point?

Can we try and avoid the usual comments such as "you should be looking after your staples/laptop/hand-eye co-ordination/anything you can think of that I have been doing wrong for my entire life" please.

Sorry, mate, that really made me laugh...

Going to have to bit the bullet and get it opened up professionally, by the local service rep' - not worth taking a chance with it shorting and/or losing your warranty opening it yourself.

If its a unibody you can get the bottom plate and the airvents out in one piece of you take all of those tiny screws out on the bottom. That may be enough to allow you to shake it out of the cooling fins if it made it that far.

I'm glad it gave you a giggle, at least some good has come out of the situation [thumbup]. We have applecare, but I'm not sure it covers rogue staples. I was really hoping to avoid having to explain this to the support department as well. [no]

I'd just forget about it personally. Cause you won't get it out yourself without opening it up or shaking it like a baby. (Both of which could end up doing more harm than good.)

This is what you get for wanting to go to Vegas so bad. Sinner.

Ha, that's where you're wrong. The following steps have removed it:

1) turn off computer
2) shine torch in to the gap to locate staple
3) hold it up to look from the underside
4) spot the location and balance the computer on a colleagues head
5) use a scalpel blade and an uncoated paperclip (the coated ones are too thick we discovered) to coax it into falling out.

I think it was more luck than anything else that got it out though, I wouldn't recommend dropping a staple in that gap to anyone.

Yeh, it took about 3 mins. The staple was still in the gap between the case and the hinge. If it had gone inside the cooling fins then it would have been a return to base job.

I know some will probably frown on this, but have you considered a magnet?

A small one should be able to attract the paper clip without causing any other issues.

I was going to try that if I hadn't managed to get it out.
