In what way?

I have a charge card with them because of the benefits it provides under it's annual charge.

is it still, refused in most shops ? because in the not so distant past, they were refused due to the cost of the charges that retailers incurred whilst processing them.

hence the apple statement.

"pretty much useless, but fashionable to have"

More shops will take it now, but you still get a growl off the guy behind the counter as it costs them more to accept it. I've considered one a couple of times but I can't see any benefits for the fees because I only book holidays and buy stuff online on credit card, everyday stuff goes on debit card.

The only places that don't take it where I would want to use it are my hairdresser and the odd bar/pub. My favoured online cycling stores also don't take it, but they take Paypal funded by it so there's little difference to me.

As I travel a lot, I get a lot from the 'benefits' that come with it, plus all of my family have cards on my account to extend a lot of the benefits to them at no cost.

I used to do this too.

Get a credit card with rewards per dollar spent and just pay off the card entirely every month. You will rake in the rewards (miles, gallons of gas, cashback) without affecting your finances at all. In fact, you would be making monthly payments to a revolving credit line which will help to strengthen your credit portfolio.

Also, it allows you to hold onto the cash in case of emergency. Worst case, you blow the cash and can't afford to pay off your card entirely so you let the balance ride until you get your extraordinary circumstance resolved.

Its crap .. I would never use one. I don't think you should have to pay a yearly fee to use a dam credit card.

I don't really like spending on my credit card its used for emergencies, when I'm abroad,or online (rarely these days) purchases.

its a platinum card, that has all the bells n whistles but like you say, all the benefits I don't really get because I don't really spend on it much.

I usually do crazy things like, sell off a few shares, buy what I want whilst my dividends are re invested back into the share pot to reflectively replenish the shares sold [yes]

I just sold 250 @ 1274p of my shares this week to pay for my engineering course.

bad time to sell them TBH, but its better than paying with my own monthly subsidence money or credit card and I don't have to pay it back and eventually I'll have accrued the sold shares back.

I think I'm OK with money

Then you obviously wouldn't use the associated benefits, hence it's crap. The annual fee cards aren't credit cards anyway.

Unlike Apple, they are worth the money.

When I worked in Food, we took it. The boss never liked having Amex, but the nice trade off about it is only like 2 or 3 people would use it a month.
More people would use Discover than Amex, and Discover is another rare card to see.

Im not sure what happened to it, but a few weeks back some people in Congress were going to help the banks make some money by forcing them to charge a yearly fee to even have a debit card!
I hope that it got crushed, burned, put in a box, and dropped in the ocean.

Exactly. I pay for my bank account because the benefits I get from it are worth much more than the fees. Rather than saying something is stupid you should investigate whether or not you will save money in the long term.

I thought about Amex but I cant see a good reason for it. MasterCard is accepted everywhere I go, and thats all I need.

My debit card gives me cash back on purchases. I have both a debit card and a credit card through the same bank, both give me cash back on purchases (I could have gotten miles, but chose cash instead).

And I'm also for using a credit card and then paying it off at the end of the month. I use my credit card to pay all my bills, then pay it off at the end of the month. No interest paid and my credit score goes up.

But on the subject of Amex. I personally never cared for the cards and will most likely never own one. I want cards that I don't have to be concerned if I can or can not use them when I need to.
