Oh yeah I am sorry a backup plan.

Oh hey there people who do this for a living, do you mind setting aside a prime weekend where you make your living and not taking any bookings? We probably wont end up paying you anything but just in case? Cheers.

well its your own fault for not having a backup plan isn't it.

what you going to do sue him because his camera broke...

meaks old pal, its your own **** up for not looking into eventualities as weddings rarely go to plan.

and your going to make your wedding day turn out **** because your letting this play on your mind (S)

I'd be more worried about the bride turning up on the day than the poxy photographer...

oh and lol for suing for damages, lol really...
I have never met anyone who has a backup videographer for a wedding (or a backup anything for that matter) and the reason for that is simple; Anything / person worth having / using / booking for anything will be booked up months in advance.

Quite! Besides, it's really the responsability or the person contracted to do the work to arrange cover if THEY can't meet their obligations, personally
As for the equipment, that's also the responsability of the contractor!

It's pretty unreasonable for him to expect you to pay for camera rental. he should of taken the hit himself, considering it was his equipment that broke. Sounds like he was just trying to make it a way to get out of the gig by making you say you didn't want his services in that case.

Being a professional videographer, I have done a big handful of weddings (and still do on occasion), but there is something that appears ridiculous about this whole thing, and I'll tell you what it is:

I have my own equipment, and ALWAYS make sure that the hire of that equipment is factored into the cost I am charging the client. i.e. $400 per camera. As with any business, you bill your clients for the gear you use for service you provide, even if the gear is yours, so essentially you are hiring the camera to yourself. For freelancers it's very important to do this, not only to cover to initial cost of the gear (and eventually pay it off), but for this following reason:

If any of my cameras were to break before a shoot, I would have the option of hiring a replacement camera with the money the client has given me for the use of my own camera, hence it would not cost the client, or myself any more money.

The biggest issue here is you seem to have done this deal with these guys on the cheap, and they are not charging a fee for their equipment, so in the case that their own gear fails they are putting themselves out of pocket to replace it. It's a bad way to do business and I avoid doing this for that exact reason.

What he then elected to do afterwards (i.e. asking you to pay for the replacement, and subsequently pulling out completely) was just plain bad business. Unfortunately you will not have a good case because as you said: it was a deal done on the cheap and it did not account for mechanical failure.

Seriously though, all that matters is what the contract says and I'm still wondering.
