Default iPhone 5 soon?
Amongst other Apple goodies:

The latest whispers in webland suggest that there might be a load of new kit released from Cupertino in time for Christmas. Yes, the Apple rumourmill has gone into overtime again, with the suggestion that company is planning to release a new iPod line, a new iPad and a new iPhone this year. iLounge website has spoken to a “highly reliable source” who apparently predicted the iPad and iPod nano. They say that the new iPod range will land next month which will include a new touchscreen replacement for the iPod Shuffle and a nano version of the iPod Touch.
There’s also whispers of a 7-inch iPad, aimed at a slightly more budget market. Just the thing to ask Santa for, right? But perhaps most shockingly is talk of an iPhone 5 being released early 2011. Could this have been rushed through to address antenna issues of the iPhone 4?
But what do you think? Are gadget successors released too quickly by manufacturers? Does it leave current customers seething that theirs isn’t the newest tech on the block any more? Do you think releases are rushed through, causing hardware issues such as “antennagate”? Have your say below… http://fwd.five.tv/gadget-show/blog/...ed-too-quickly

I'm not sure about a touch screen iPod Shuffle. Isn't the point of the Shuffle that it's small, surely they'd have to make it much bigger to incorporate a touch screen?

If there is an iPhone launching in early 2011 I'd put my money on it that it's not an iPhone 5, but more likely a Verizon iPhone. Just have to wait and see I guess.

Wow, iPhone5 around six months away? I certainly hope not that is way too soon. An iPhone4S or 4GS (4G capable product) is more likely.

Well it's pretty obvious that the white iPhone 4 isn't delayed because they can't get the white paint to stick to the chassis (seriously, whoever came up with that excuse should never be allowed a job again), so maybe they will release it as the iPhone 5 and try to forget about the iPhone 4?

Huh? It's just a name isn't it?

the bumphone 5 will no doubt be the "fixed" bumphone 4....

and no doubt all the apple bummers, will lap it up thinking it is a new model when infact its the bumphone 4 in a new case, with a few extra features (like a good signal)

Yes, just a name. Similar product though. I can't see them abandoning the way the iPhone4 looks, quite a feat of engineering if you ask me.

I doubt Apple would finally release the white iPhone4's and then announce a brand new iPhone a couple months later. But I guess all things are on the table really when it comes to Consumer Reports not putting the 4 on their list of recommendations.

I think T-Mobile is much more likely (with 4G).

I don't think that the shake to play iPod shuffle with voice commands was that popular. It would be interesting if they made a small device with a touch surface but no screen for the next shuffle. One side of it would be touch sensitive and it would have a hold button to skip accidental touches. Something like slide you finger up or down it to adjust volume, a single tap on the sensor does play/pause and taping with two fingers or double taping skips to the next song. Just an idea... but there are plenty of Mac and iPod rumors always floating around I guess.

I haven't heard a rumor about that, all rumors have been pointing to Verizon. Even some of the internal Verizon memos I've seen from Verizon employees point to an iPhone in Q1 2011. Their shots showed an iPhone with a Verizon logo on the back. I don't really see apple allowing that.

Not saying it isn't possible for T-Mobile to land the iPhone, but they have no coverage in rural areas.

Why don't they just open up the iPhone to all carriers, and sell it from their store unlocked, in the US like the do here now?

Im confused by the article itself tbh, they say 'a new ipad this year' then go on to say there is also talk of a '7 inch ipad'... so does that mean a new ipad AND also a 7 inch ipad being announced?

Or do they mean the new ipad IS the 7 inch one? [help]

Well for one an unlocked GSM iPhone wouldn't work with Verizon, there would have to be multiple models to work on the different networks.

AT&T paid for a 5 year exclusive iContract.

Neither does AT&T.

While I hate AT&T, I must say they do have excellent call coverage (when it works) but their 3g coverage is a joke.

It'd be the only way they could fix the antenna issue for the white models in such a way that they wouldn't be making a hardware change to the whites while saying the blacks had no issue. Though the mindless zombies they call customers will likely defend the move, it's not like it would go unnoticed. [rolleyes]

To expand on what idchoppers posted earlier, do you understand the networks in the US Bungle?

AT&T: iPhone 4 works perfectly.
T-Mobile: iPhone 4 only works on EDGE due to T-Mobile using different 3G GSM frequency.
Verizon: iPhone 4 not supported as Verizon is a CDMA network.
Sprint: iPhone 4 not supported as Sprint is a CDMA/WiMax (4g) network.

Us in the UK are lucky enough that all networks are using the same GSM bands.

I think the main problem is the contract to keep it exclusive to AT&T though..?

It seems a bit silly that the networks don't all use the same system.
