I might have known someone would bring up the old "My X has smoked 1200 fags a day for 200 years and isn't dead" argument. What you fail to realise it that for every smoker who lives to a ripe old age there are plenty who are in their graves. Smoking kills - that is an indisputable fact.
Not to mention it hurts people around the smoker.

I smoked for 14 or so years, tried many things to quit and of course everything failed. I actually had to start on smokeless tobacco (Skoal, Copenhagen) to quit smokes. It was much easier to quit the chew. Been tobacco free for over 5 years now. And zero desire for a cig, I find it repulsive now [thumbup]

I'm not sure I buy this at all. 13 years of inhaling carcinogens into your body. Surely you'd have disproportionate risk for lung cancer than someone who never smoked.[rolleyes]
Well over time every single cell in your body regenerates, approximately 7 years from now you won't have a single cell in your body that is there now. Therefore if you quit and don't get anything before that time, the new cells which form will no longer be 'pre-cancerous' and at risk from developing into cancer. Well that is my understanding anyway from what I was told, maybe it's wrong.

Even if that were true in the way that you think it is, the tar and other junk in your body doesn't just disappear.

Actually it does - our bodys are very good at removing things that shouldn't be there (assuming you don't keep pumping them in more than it can handle anyway). Tar isn't indestructible gradually it will wear down/disappear. Just do quick google search depending on how long you smoked for determines how long it takes for your lungs to clear.

I smoke a pack every two weeks... and I love it when I do. If I smoke more than one, I feel off, but that one a day or so is quite nice.

Glad i never started smoking, seems like a real hard addiction to beat. Money wasted on buying it, time wasted on smoking it, and losing your health in the process. Must feel pretty damn good if all that is worth it.
Don't even forget price premiums that you pay for health insurance and in increased chance of denial, or less than regular coverage.

I smoke from time to time. Once a month if that. I used to smoke daily though for 5 months 2 years ago. I tried out different packs to see what I like. I bought a pack that thankfully made me quiet it was so nasty.

Definitely the smokers fault getting addicted to nicotine in the first place but have a little think about when you're really hungry, then you can't eat, then you're still really hungry but still you can't eat, try that for a week or so and that's how hard it is to stop smoking, I quit 6 years ago from 40 a day.

I can't believe that any government can allow the sale of cigarettes, they have been proven to kill you, they cause massive heath problems, they are more addictive than heroin or crack, oh wait, they bring in massive revenues in tax, hmmmmm, i wonder.

good for you guys~[thumbup] i'm not denying that it's extremely addictive and hard to quit. I'm mostly saying though, that when you're in your 30s with kids, it's ignorant and irresponsible to be smoking a pack a day. Simple as that. The excuse he gives is, "well, I don't want to live to be old and decrepit....ect..ect.." so yeah,, in his mind @ 39 he doesn't want to live to 80, but he's smoked 1 and 1/2 packs a day since high school.......so, yeah, he may not have to suffer being 80, but his kids will probably get to witness his organs being eaten away by cancer when he's 55.[rolleyes] He's a good guy, I just hate watching it because it's so ignorant and avoidable. I've mentioned he ought to get doctor's help to quit ie:nic patch, whatever it takes.... and he is starting to consider it. It's as much 30 years of habit as it is physical addiction. That's gotta be hard to break. The person who mentioned going to skoal/copenhagen instead of cigs, yeah, that's not ideal, but it's a profoundly better alternative to smoking.

I have absolutely no problem with someone smoking socially, or like to smoke a cig or two when they drink. It's really hard for people to smoke in moderation, though. I have a few freinds that do. ie: less than a pack a month or something.....or they occasionally borrow smokes when they drink. Anyways, I'm not for making tobacco illegal or anything like that. I, personally, just think a heavy smoking habit is just really ignorant knowing what we know.

also, Pickle, moderate alcohol use is no where near as bad for you as smoking. In fact, it actually has health benefits. Heavy abuse of either alcohol or smoking....it's hard to pick which is worse..... do you want you're liver to rot away or your lungs? tough call

I'm about to hit my 1 year smoke free after smoking for ~15 years.

One thing I have found is that it is easy to resist the urge to smoke now then it was when I was smoking.

Now, whenever I'm around a smoker and get that tiny little urge, I tell myself that I have two choices. I can either fight the urge now, or fight an urge that will be 100x worse if I were to start smoking again. It's one of the easiest choices I can make.

A short illness or dropping dead Vs a greatly increased chance of a long lingering death, stuck in a bed with tubes keeping you alive, the chance of having to lug around an oxygen bottle, the chance of early blindness, the increased chance of having parts of your body lopped off due to circulatory problems, etc?

Then, as has been said, there's the 'second hand' affect. As a kid, everyone was a heavy smoker and it wasn't unusual to actually see the smeke stiing in layers in the air or rooms. Hate to think what it was doing to the lungs of us youngsters!

Smoking is just more visible harmful addiction. There is other addictions which are considered healthy and most people use them every day.

The site below is finnish, but there is lots of english text of actualy source and links. It is standard forum, so you can navigate through pages without understanding finnish at all and skip all finnish talk.

http://www.tiede.fi/keskustelut/laak...le-t39451.html

Although I would ban alcohol, if have to choose between smoking and that. High doses make people violent animal which creates traffic accidents, kills, assaults, property damage and annoyance among people against drunkards.

I quit myself over a year ago after having smoked for 5 or 6 years, and just within the past couple months picked it back up. This last time quitting wasn't hard at all for some reason, but it was easy to pick back up again after we've been hanging around with friends from work who smoke when we're out at a bar.
