Default Finally decided on what Scope to get for my rifle...
after months of trawling, and relentless asking the "gun dudes" on here, I finally took the plunge on getting a better one than my Hawke scope.

so today I ordered a:

Rhino 6-24x52 rifle scope

Features

• 30mm Body tube
• Black
• Mil Dot Reticle
• Illuminated Reticle
• Parallax Adjustable (Sidewheel)
• Sunshade Included

the pic is not my rifle, but its that scope, its gonna dwarf my S410 custom carbine [rofl].

Nice.

Are you a hunter or field target? been a while since i had any air-rilfes or air pistols and i was considering a precharged rifle (As i'm a scuba diver) but can't really justify the cost.

I am not up to date on rifles, what kind of rifle is this? What is the range?

There are so many guns I want to buy...lol.

Remington 700 SPS .308 is likely my next purchase. Then an AR-15 sometime next year followed by another 1911. >.>

Aim at the bull on a target at a set distance.
Shoot 3 rounds or so.
See how far off you were.
Adjust scope with the dials.
Shoot 3 rounds or so.
Keep doing this till the shots are on target at this set distance.

Meaning that the pellet has that many ft/lbs of energy leaving the muzzle?

I know I've come across this before when someone has posted about an air rifle in the UK. 12 lbf is the maximum for a UK air rifle but it seems to be mistakenly replaced with the suffix ft-lbs. lbf is an old measurement of force, foot-pound-second. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound-force

Same thing I'm thinking... it's shooter slang to say energy as opposed to force...

That's crazy low... less than 1/10th the power of a .22LR bullet!

My .300RUM handloads come out closer to 5000!

fps is the muzzle velocity , in relation to air rifles.

ft-lbf is the energy ,produced to propel the pellet.

its the same thing really fps is used by americans typically, and ft-lbf we tend to use

12 ft lbs on a .22 air rifle would be about 600fps
12 ft lbs on a .177 is more like 800fps

I found this website helpful for working out velocity/energy and such.

Plenty left... just because it's a high-energy round, doesn't mean that if you properly tailor the bullet to the rifle, load, animal and distance you'll be shooting on average that you'd destroy all of the meat! The 5000+ft/lbs would be a 220gr SMK BTHP going for 1000+ yards, hardly a hunting round!

jb2cool - But to get the .22LR down to that speed, the bullet'd already have traveled 350+ yards... which the .177 wouldn't touch, short of lobbing it in like a ballistic missile! [rofl]

Of course the .22 is going to develop more force at lower velocities, because it has more mass on its side.

I think the issue could be that the animal is going to be left. Left in its burrow to die. You kind of want the power of a 22LR for instant killing rather than your animal limping off to die somewhere.

Micron,
If your bullet is 220grains and the rifle is putting out 5000ft/lbs then the calculation on this site (http://www.pyramydair.com/site/articles/formulas/) means that the bullet is going at mach 3/2285mph/3350fps

Is this right?

Nothing sucks worse than your future Deer Tacos or Beef-n-Bambi chilli runs off cuz it didn't go BANG-Flop!

For deer, I use anywhere between a 150gr Hornady GMX up to a 180gr Hornady SST, depending on the type of hunting and distances...
