Default One of many disappointments in today's world
Seriously, where are our shield generators or photon shields like those in star trek? Are these completely science fiction or why haven't we came up with something similar?

Flash backs from War of the Worlds and those tripods make me urk compared to today's technologies and beg me to consider the question of why it's still only science fiction...

Your .02 please?

Technology and advancements takes time especially when there are a lot of obstacles like the market, society as a whole, people, cultures..

Anyway, I agree. Usually after I've been gaming during the nights I look into the sky and wonder why we aren't exploring that big empty void.

We were going back to the moon around 2020, but I doubt that considering it keeps getting pushed back and funding cut

Are you seriously trying to use some randomly dreamed up technology for a TV show with a silly name based on a sub-atomic particle as some kind of milestone for human technological advancement?

Politics and money - and stupid, short sighted people (see politicians)!

Many people don;t know that ALL the hardware for Apollo 18 and much of 19 were already built and ready to be used, when the politicians cut funding dead!
I can understand it if they'd called it quits after 19, but as so much had already been spent [rolleyes]

R&D can be VERY expensive, hence so many multi-national tie-ups!

You can thank religion for a lot of major hold backs in human history.

Nah it's just fear, fear of the unknown, what people don't understand or can't control. In the past religion was used as an easy excuse but the same happens today. People try to ignore/bury the really radical world changing ideas because they are just that. Don't forget that many of the great scientists over the last few hundred years believed in God (not talking about Einstein who was agnostic at best).

It is funny indeed that Xeo is frustrated by sciences lack of progress when if religion hadn't have been so retarded over the last 2000 years we'd probably be way further than we are. Think of Galileo who was put under house arrest for LIFE for just trying to prove the earth revolved around the sun - how Xeo expects science to have progressed more when 'his' people were stifling science to that degree is nothing short of hilarious.

Xeo, tbh you're one of my many disappointments in today's world, that someone can be so blindly following a book written in a time where humans understood so little about our world and trusts it to guide his entire life and views is embarrassing to me. If there were less people like you in the world (on all 'sides' of religion) the world would be an infinitely better place to live.

Technically 'photon shields' do exist - we call them electromagnetic fields though. Controlling them is rather difficult but in their singular component of either an electric or magnetic field, they are more manageable. But then there's the issue of making them powerful enough to produce the effects that one is after without it damaging the object that it's trying to protect: the Earth does it pretty well against charged particles from the Sun with its magnetic field but it's nowhere near 100% effective.

I heard the British and Americans are jointly building a tank that has some kind of magnetic shield.
