Default My car is dead
Went to get in my car this evening to go to work and it wouldnt open with the remote locking, so I used the key in the door. Then once inside it wouldnt start, turn on or anything. As if the battery is dead. I'd driven it no problems 10 hours previous and hadn't left anything running to drain the battery. Any other ideas?

Jump the car to get it started.

If it starts, take it to a store. Like here we have AutoZone and they will check your battery and alternator for free.
Will let you know if it is one of them or both.

I say jump it first. Does the starter make a "click" at all when you try to start it? I'm more willing to bet that the battery is either dead, or that the alternator died thus killing the battery also.

you may find that the Key to car pairing has gone out of sync.

Google for re syncing your particular cars key back to the car.

my car sometimes does it and when it does I simply follow the procedures that main dealers do to re-initialize the key pairing.

have you tried your spare key ? (not the valet key )

The key turns in the ignition but i dont think anything is happening. The dashboard never lights up nevermind trying to start it. It's a relatively new car so the alternator should be ok. There have been battery issue's with this car though, and problems with the thing that controls various eelctronis when the car is 'off'. It meant batteries got prematurely flattened. It was a recall to get that fixed i think but i've ehard nothing personally.

with my car if the battery is flat what it does to tell you is that it clicks repeatedly and the headlights strobe (built in tel tail system)

where do you keep your keys, cos you may have inadvertently reprogrammed the key if it was in your pocket and the buttons were depressed in the correct sequence completely by fluke, also its been know for ground radar to take out the transponders in some cars if you park to close to one, also I would investigate the possibility of a flat battery because I presume you have climate control/Air con ?

there's a thermistor in the Air-con systems of most cars Its nicknamed the Hedgehog that controls the fan motors and if that goes faulty it can make the air-con motor keep working (ever ever so slowly so you cant hear it) even with the keys out of the Ignition.

that could be a thing to look at because its been fooking hot and no doubt you've had it on full whack.

my air con fan goes off 10 min after the car is switched off, I can just about hear it whurring in the dash and when it stops the aircon flap closes too as the vac resovior equalizes to the atmosphere allowing it to spring shut.

Yeah the radar could have done something. I leave it unlocked at work though and it locked up ok once I got home.

The aircon is kind of permanently on, working on a duty cycle, so as and when required.

Another thing I thought of is the amplifier in the book i installed. It's hooked up to a 12v power socket in the boot so that when the car is started, the socket becomes active and turns the amp on. Theres a possibility somethings gone wrong there.

Just jumped it and it's alive. Don't know how it got flat within 12 hours without leaving anything turned on though.

keep an eye on ur aircon fan then matey.

this amp you mention is it a recent ,non oe addition ? because some power sockets are contiously live with the igntion off,and you should really be running a remote turn on,directly from the headunit to the amp and not switching on when you flip the ignition on,because if the socket is always live your amp will run the battery down in a matter of hrs

I would have, but it's tricky with the factory integrated head unit thing, The 12v in the boot should only be active with car on i think.

you'll probably find that the socket is designed for low power drain items that stay on in the car like chillers etc and is constantly on (obviously Im throwing these Idears out there cos my cars rear 12v socket is constantly on (wont flatten battery unless somthing is plugged in to complete the circuit).

Well, from what I've been told it's different in the Civic. Plus, it's been fine for a year or so. Still it could be.

do you lock it with the windows open (do they auto shut when the alarms on, do you have any gay fluffy dice or air freshener tree hanging from the rear view mirror that a light breeze can blow to cause the motion sensor to be tripped, to partially set off the alarm every time the wind blows [yes]

hmm. last thought ( I kept my paranoid one for last) would you think some ****er at work switched your side lights on when you left you car open, then he came back later and switched them off....

its a RAF camp after all mate and there's some right spastics in the RAF who would do any stupid thing if they thought it would get a laugh....

Ive had a spacker at work once, who thought, it would be funny to change one of my registration letters with Electrical tape... luckily, I notice these things because I am like a hawk with my property, and if I hadn't I could have been pulled over for suspicion of bilking, and or driving to circumvent the ANPR system.. and that's 6 points and unlimited fine...

the ****tard changed the U in my reg to an O

I'll take it in as per the recall and see if that sorts it out (should it happen again). I have also heard that leaving the car unlocked means part of the electronics don't shut down fully. That could have something to do with it as I don't lock it at work.

Can I ask which unnaturally safe part of the UK you work in, so that you can leave your car unlocked during your working day? I wouldn't even do it on our secure car park!

he works on a secure military installation (RAF)

but to be honest I'd rather leave my car unlocked with the engine running in the middle of Manchester [yes]

Yeah there's armed guards so it's relatively secure. The radar can interfere with keyfobs though so we're told to either lock with a key or not at all. This is the same radar which apparently isnt frying my brain because it sends pulses over my head.
