American Akita?

Has anybody had any experience with American Akitas?
Ive felt like getting a dog for a while now and would like to get a Akita or American Akita puppy which i could train, grow up being used to me and my mum.
And be some companionship for me and my mum while also being a guard dog for my mum while im not there.
I also wonder how well there suited to english summers, i know they shed there winter coat.

Don't know how it compares, but I've always liked Siberian huskies, they look stunning with blue eyes.

See if you can find a forum specifically for that bread. Then ask your questions there, ask alot of questions. Find the dos and donts for akitas i.e. what food to feed, exercise needs, health problems. Then find a reputable breeder and not a puppymill or a breeder that just breeds to make $$$. Typically a good breeder will ask you alot of questions too (usually an interview) to make sure you can handle the dog and are not a total shithead

Make sure you're ready to train a dog like that. Like with all big dogs, if an Akita hauls off and bites someone, it can cause a serious injury. It's a territorial breed, so make sure that the dog doesn't become the pack leader of your family. The less that the dog thinks it owns, the better off your friends and non-immediate family will be.

They aren't particularly rowdy or high energy dogs (not like a rottie anyways), but they do require lots of exercise to keep them from getting bored. A bored Akita has a great potential for destruction, much like any other dog.

It will need to be brushed often, and it will need a bath every few weeks. You may also want to take it to a professional dog groomer every couple months. My father has his Akita shaved for the summer, but you only want to do that if you live in an area that gets fairly humid.
