Quick everyone head to Brisbane to take advantage of Spoon's trust!
Hahaha I'm on!

why would someone steal stuff while you're at home when he can do it when you're not?
They maybe think they've great self confidence to think they got the right sneak skills.

I don't know. I'm not a burglar. But I have been burgled in my sleep before now. They forced in through a patio door on the ground floor and I was on the second floor and didn't hear a thing.

According to the stats, most burglaries are opportunist. If they spot an easy access, like sleeping with a window open, they probably won't care if you are home or not.

A couple days ago I found out that Finland, my home country has the third highest guns per capita rate in the world, yet I don't think anyone in here protects their homes with guns. I don't think I've heard of a case in Finland where the burglars have come in while people are in their homes. Also, I don't think you are actually allowed to shoot anyone, even if they invade your home.

I'm pretty sure most burglars would rather burgle an empty house than an occupied one. That's why it's a good idea to make it look as if someone is in when you're away.

The knowledge that I don't live in a such a state of paranoia that I feel I need to keep weapons by my bed
/runs
I'm with you, i don't feel the need either, i actually feel safe enough already in my home. I do have an alarm system that was already fitted though.

It's also handy to remember that whilst people do get burgled, the majority of us go through our lives without experiencing such a trauma.

Put a robot doll in front of the TV with a toy gun usually works..

I have security at my home, and my two businesses. Both businesses have been broken into....it took the cops 20 minutes to get there. I was actually further than the local PD from my office that got broken into and arrived before them and waited for them to show up.

Alarms don't help as much these days, they still have a 5 minute window, and it only takes 5 minutes to jack a bunch of stuff and be on your way. (Which was 4 laptops and two desktops, each of which were in their own locked offices.) On the plus side your insurance is lower for being alarmed.

I guess all I am saying is, don't live blind thinking "Oh we have an alarm, we're fine." Not that owning a gun would have changed anything at all either. but I'd rather have one then not. People have killed for sneakers for christ sake.

Not the case here. The new fashion is to do it specifically when someone is home.

Why should they spend time and effort rummaging through your closets to find something, if they can just ask you where the valuables are, while raping your daughter. When they threaten you and your family with death, you will certainly do their work for them.

Burglaries still outnumber home invasions, but while the burglaries are going down in number, home invasions are going up.

a) most opportunist thieves are smacked up crackheads and probably wouldn't care.
b) I didn't say that they did it by choice, just that it happens.

The things I worry about them stealing are the ones that can't be replaced. I couldn't give a toss about a TV, stereo, laptop etc.
