Anyone into archery? I have always wanted to try so I signed up for lessons starting next week. I'm excited! what kind of bow does your buddy from the office have? compound or recurve? I have mainly stuck to a compound bow, but used a recurve some for bowfishing. VERY different, and if you dont like one, you may very well like the other. it will definitely be easier to shoot a compound bow. about the hitting your arm with the string... if that is happening, you are holding it wrong. since you are taking lessons, they will probably start you off right so you dont get any bad habits. If you are on a compound (which i will assume) there are a couple things to keep in mind. when you draw back, take note where your hand is against your face, for my, my index finger knuckle is right under my cheek point, your anchor point should be in the same place EVERY TIME. you can equip your bow with a kisser button that will touch the corner of your mouth at full draw, dont only rely on the kisser button, use it in addition to your main anchor point, a second reference will only help you. if you are using your fingers to draw back, dont curl the string, if you feel you cant pull back without curling the string, the draw weight is probably set too high. when you release, try to flick your fingers so the string doesnt roll of your fingertips. there are finger pads from cowhide and whatnot that will help this. If you are using a mechanical release (easier than fingers) maintain a comfortable anchor, and slow squeeze the trigger like a firearm, or slowly press with your thumb depending on style of release. after you release you need to follow through, sometimes this can be hard because you want to move the bow out of the way to see your arrow. if you dont, your release and you moving the bow can become one movement and you will start throwing shots. keep your release hand anchored until the arrow hits the target, confirmed either by sound, sight, or a long period of time ![]() those are some of the basics, how you aim and drawback can vary depending on your sights and rest, and unless you know that off the back... they should help you out at the class[thumbup] congrats on the new hobby, i have split a couple of arrows in my time, and shaved off plenty of vanes/feathers.. shooting tight groups is great until you start ruining $12 arrows. small spots on targets are much safer for your gear[yes] |

I use to shoot bows and even killed a deer with a bow, but I outgrew my bow and never bought a new one. It is fun I really and I like single cam compounds like Mathews, Parker , etc. I am sure you will have fun. The only thing I can think of that isn't fun about archery is when the string smacks the inside of your forearm leaving bruises after awhile.
