I don't know about anyone else but I use search engines to search for stuff, not to be made to look at random pretty pictures or admire the flashy homepage.

The reason I like Google is exactly the reason why you seem to dislike them - It's a blank page with a text box, and it finds exactly what I'm looking for.

Agreed.

I often attribute Google's success to their plain & simple approach.

They were extremely dial-up friendly when no one else was, when everyone was clamoring for the most content on a single page--and still are.

But if you look carefully it can be discovered that Google.com has more "clutter" on it today than ever before.

I often attribute Google's success to their plain & simple approach. That and the fact that their name has become 'genericised' so that many people now use Google not just to refer to Google itself but to the actual act of searching the internet.

I hardly ever hear anyone say 'I'll search the internet for that' or 'I'll browse for that', everyone I know says 'I'll Google it'.

The word seems to fit perfectly somehow, 'I'll Bing it' or 'I'll Yahoo it' just don't sound right.

May seem a daft thing, but their choice of name may have been the most important thing they ever did.

in that image, google is just a search engine interface, the others are portals.

I heard "just bing it" on the radio the other day while going to work, so it's catching on.

Saying "just yahoo it" or just "windows live it" doesn't seem to work as well.

"Just Altavista it"

I agree there is a difference in what they are trying to achieve to a point, but Yahoo initially and primarily (unless I am mistaken) is a company and a service for finding information on the internet. I remember going back years and years when you could browse through hundreds of thousands of categories in Yahoo, it was like a massive hierarchy of the contents of the Internet (you maybe still can, not used their site for years).

But I think the message is still a valid one. It's about a clean, crisp interface which is so simple to use.

Altavista was a site I used a lot around that time as well.

Doesn't quite trip off the tongue as well though lol
I remember using Webcrawler back it the days.
Then Digital came out with Altavista (altavista.digital.com, if I remember correctly) and blew it away.

Back to topic, It still amuses me that people still go to the search provider's homepage first to use the query entry box when the exact same box is already sitting on their toolbar [rolleyes] - btw, this is about people I know in real life, so don't get the hump if you think I'm calling out anyone here

You can run, but you can't hide.

Can you delete images from this service you are using?

2nded!

Though I do admit to enjoying the odd logo's Google comes up with. But I like it because its simple, uncluttered. And just plain works.

I really like the new searches on google how you can alter your search to only look at news, books, blogs, discussions and updates.

eg. If I want the general public's opinion of something rather than a news article or blog then filtering by discussions is a good way to bring up a forum topic.

It's all about the clicks...

To use the search toolbar, you first have to click to lauch the browser, then click in the search bar before you can start to type.

If you have Google as your homepage however, you simply click once to open the browser, then you can start typing immediately, cutting the number of clicks required by a huge 50%!

Not true.. All I do is open firefox, press ctrl+k and start typing.
The only extra thing i have to do is press ctlr+k which isn't that bad considering you're gonna type anyway

There's no argument, having google as your homepage is the most efficient way of searching.

Why don't you just use google? If good search results and a pretty picture is what you want then google is all you need...
Mind telling me how you did that ?

That's assuming you don't already have a browser open... and what's the likelihood of that happening
