Mind telling me how you did that ?
If you are logged into Google, move the most to the bottom left corner of your browser window and it will allow you to change your background.

In response to this thread, I have always found Google far superior especially compared to Bing.

It wont let you change anything...

ok but the link given in the picture works.

Though it's a US only google thing. once I type in google.com again it defaults back to AU google and it goes white.

Ah, well in the US that is how you change it. I can honestly say I haven't tried it on the Google for other countries.

I've always hated the boring look of google.com with just its crap logo slapped on and iGoogle is just a mess of crap themes and god awful 'gadgets.'

So I've converted to Bing.com and it's beautiful!
Try it out for yourself. It also knows that I'm in Japan so all my background images are random Japanese things - it's really nice.
Also - try searching for images ....
It's SO much better!
You choose your search engine based on what it looks like?! Search engines are all about the code going on on the server side - not what the front page looks like. Sure some things in life are about style over substance, but search engines are all about the substance.

Only thing I'll give Bing is that Maps can often be better than Google's offering for image quality/resolution. Also the "birds eye view" comes in very useful in my line of work.
